Prezista is a brand-name prescription drug that is manufactured by Janssen Pharmaceuticals, Inc. A generic version of Prezista, darunavir, has been approved by the FDA but may not yet be available on the market.

What is Prezista?

Prezista is used to treat HIV-1 infection, an infection that can cause acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) if left untreated. Prezista is a brand-name drug that contains darunavir. It works as a protease inhibitor that helps slow the growth and spread of the virus throughout the body. Prezista is not a cure for HIV infection and it must be given with other medications, such as cobicistat or ritonavir, to effectively reduce HIV levels in the body. Reducing the amount of HIV (viral load) in the blood can help improve the immune system and reduce the risk of complications from HIV, such as serious infections.

Tell your doctor if you have a history of liver problems, including hepatitis B or hepatitis C, sulfa medication allergies, diabetes, hemophilia, or other medical conditions before taking Prezista. You should also tell your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding before taking Prezista. If you are taking other medications, including prescription drugs, over-the-counter medicines, and herbal supplements, you should advise your doctor since other medications may interact with Prezista.

Take Prezista as prescribed. This medication is usually taken on a daily basis with food. You should not stop taking Prezista or change the dosage without guidance from your healthcare provider.

What are the side effects of Prezista?

The most common side effects of Prezista are nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, headache, rash, and abdominal or stomach pain. Other side effects may include fatigue, abnormal dreams, itching, and indigestion.

Serious side effects may include high blood sugar levels (hyperglycemia), body fat changes, immune system changes (immune reconstitution syndrome), and, in people with hemophilia, increased bleeding problems. Liver damage and severe skin reactions have also been reported while using Prezista. Tell your doctor if side effects develop, persist, or worsen while taking Prezista.

This is not a complete list of side effects. Consult your doctor or healthcare professional for additional information and medical advice regarding other possible side effects or drug interactions. You can report unlisted side-effects to the FDA.
