Divigel is a clear, colorless, and odorless gel that contains estradiol. Estradiol is an estrogen steroid hormone, which also functions as the major female sex hormone. It is involved in the management of menstrual cycles in women. During menopause, the ovaries make less of this hormone, leading to symptoms like hot flashes and vaginal dryness, burning, and irritation.
Divigel is a prescription-only drug. It is applied to your upper thigh and absorbed into the skin. Estradiol then enters the bloodstream to help reduce hot flashes, vaginal dryness, and mood changes. Divigel administers lower doses of estradiol than other hormone replacement therapies. It is available in packets containing 0.25, 0.5, 0.75, and 1.0 g of estradiol, which translates to 0.25 mg, 0.5 mg, 0.75 mg, 1.0 mg and 1.25 mg of estradiol per day, respectively.
Side effects that tend to accompany the use of Divigel include nausea or vomiting, bloating, breast pain and tenderness, headache, and weight changes. More side effects may occur. These include, but are not limited to, irregular vaginal bleeding or spotting, vaginal yeast infections, and upper respiratory tract infections. This list does not include all possible side effects so talk to your healthcare provider before using Divigel.
Estrogen therapy should not be used if you have ever had a history of breast cancer. Estrogen therapy may increase the risk of endometrial cancer or breast cancer. It’s also important to tell your doctor if you have ever had a history of blood clots, such as deep vein thrombosis (DVT) or pulmonary embolism (PE). Estrogen treatment may increase the risk of blood clots, stroke, or heart attack in some women. Consult your healthcare provider for other possible warnings and precautions associated with Divigel.
