Climara is a brand-name skin patch that contains a female hormone known as estradiol. These patches are commonly used to treat symptoms of menopause such as hot flashes, and vaginal dryness, burning, and irritation. These symptoms are caused as the body produces less and less estrogen as a woman ages. Climara is also used to treat women with low estrogen levels or those who have had their ovaries removed.
Estrogen is a female sex hormone that promotes the development and maintenance of female characteristics in the human body. During menopause, a woman’s estrogen levels drop considerably which in turn causes the aforementioned symptoms.
Climara is not recommended for you if you have liver disease, a bleeding disorder, unusual vaginal bleeding, history of hormone-dependent cancer (such as breast, uterine, ovarian, or thyroid cancer), or if you have ever had a heart attack, stroke, a blood clot, or if you will be having major surgery.
Common Climara side effects of Climara typically include back pain, headache, itching or pain of the vagina or genital area, thick, white vaginal discharge with mild or no odor, breast lumps, and weight gain.
Some less common side effects that can occur include body aches, chills, cough, diarrhea, ear congestion, loss of voice, nasal congestion, runny nose, or sneezing.
It should be noted that using Climara may increase your risk of breast cancer, heart attack, stroke, or blood clot.
This is not a complete list of side effects so you consult your healthcare provider for medical advice on the risks and benefits involved with using Climara.
