What is Mesalamine?

Mesalamine is FDA-approved to treat the symptoms of bowel disease called ulcerative colitis. These symptoms include diarrhea, rectal bleeding, inflammation, tissue damage, and stomach pain. Mesalamine belongs to a class of drugs called aminosalicylate anti-inflammatory agents. It can also be used to help prevent symptoms of ulcerative colitis from recurring. Mesalamine works by reducing the swelling and inflammation of cells in the colon.

Mesalamine is available in different brands, each delivering different doses of medication. Some Mesalamine formulations are used by adults only, and some can also be used by children five years and older. The pill should be taken whole (and not split, chewed, or crushed) to allow the drug to be properly released into the colon.

Before using Mesalamine, you should let your doctor know if you have ever had any of the following: a blockage in your stomach or intestines (such as pyloric stenosis), a skin condition such as eczema, liver disease, or kidney disease.
