Generic ticagrelor has been approved by the FDA. However, it has not been released for sale in the United States yet. Generic versions tend to be more affordable than their brand-name counterparts. As you wait for the FDA to release a generic alternative to Brilinta, you can save money at participating pharmacies with a Brilinta coupon from SingleCare.
Brilinta contains the active ingredient ticagrelor and belongs to a drug class called antiplatelets, or platelet aggregation inhibitors. It's a prescription medicine that's used to prevent heart attacks and lower the risk of stroke in people who have acute coronary syndrome or who have had a heart attack. Brilinta blocks platelets and thins the blood, which helps prevent clotting.
Brilinta is available in 60 mg and 90 mg tablets. It's usually taken twice a day, so 60 tablets gives you a 30-day supply. It can be taken with or without food, though your doctor may have a preference based on your condition. Brilinta is usually taken with a low-dose (75 to 100 mg) aspirin. Follow your doctor's instructions and refer to the medication guide for full prescribing information.
Common side effects of blood thinners, like Brilinta, are shortness of breath, dizziness, nausea, and diarrhea. Brilinta can also cause bruising or minor bleeding that occurs more often than normal. You can help prevent bleeding gums by brushing your teeth gently with a soft-bristled toothbrush. You can prevent nosebleeds by using a humidifier at home and, if necessary, blowing your nose gently. Consult a healthcare professional for medical advice if any of these side effects get worse. Get emergency medical help if you have bleeding that won’t stop, black or bloody stools, red or pink urine, or if you are coughing up blood or vomit that looks like coffee grounds. Severe bleeding can be life-threatening or cause death, so always get medical advice for bleeding, even if you are unsure if it is an emergency.
Other side effects may occur. Consult your healthcare professional for additional information and questions about side effects.
Examples of drugs that interact with Brilinta include:
Certain antibiotics such as Biaxin (clarithromycin)
Certain anticonvulsant drugs such as Dilantin (phenytoin), Tegretol (carbamazepine), and phenobarbital
Certain antifungals such as Nizoral (ketoconazole) or Sporanox (itraconazole)
Certain antiviral drugs such as Norvir (ritonavir) or Viracept (nelfinavir)
Certain statins such as Mevacor (lovastatin) or Zocor (simvastatin)
Lanoxin (digoxin)
Opioid pain medications
Rifampin
This is not a full list of drug interactions. Brilinta can interact with many drugs. Before taking Brilinta, tell your healthcare professional about all the medications you take, including prescription and over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and supplements.
Brilinta is not appropriate for everyone. People who are allergic to ticagrelor, any other drug in the class, or any inactive ingredient in Brilinta should not take Brilinta. Brilinta should not be taken by people who are actively bleeding, people with severe liver problems, people who have a history of intracranial hemorrhage (bleeding in the brain), or people undergoing urgent coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery. Before taking Brilinta, tell your healthcare professional about all of the medical conditions you have and your medical history.
Your healthcare professional will tell you how long to take Brilinta. Do not stop taking Brilinta unless directed by your healthcare professional. This is because stopping Brilinta can increase the risk of stroke, heart attack, and death. The length of time you have to take Brilinta will depend on the indication for use. Generally, people take Brilinta for 6 to 12 months, or longer.
Store Brilinta at room temperature. Keep the bottle tightly closed when not in use. Keep out of sight and out of reach of children and pets.
Brilinta should generally be taken with 75 to 100 mg of aspirin per day. Taking more than 100 mg of aspirin per day can actually make Brilinta less effective. Ask your healthcare provider about aspirin dosage.
You can take Brilinta with or without food. If you consume grapefruit products such as grapefruit, grapefruit juices, or fruit juices that contain grapefruit, check with your healthcare provider. Grapefruit may increase levels of Brilinta in the body, which can increase the risk of shortness or breath, bleeding, and other side effects.
Plavix (clopidogrel) and Brilinta (ticagrelor) are similar drugs in that they are both antiplatelet medications that prevent blood clots. They're both used to reduce the risk of heart attack and stroke. However, Brilinta is more effective than Plavix. Your doctor may prescribe Brilinta at the beginning of your treatment and eventually switch to Plavix, depending on how Brilinta is working for you. Brilinta is a brand name only drug while Plavix is available in a generic version.
Brilinta is an antiplatelet drug. Some examples of other antiplatelet drugs include Plavix (clopidogrel), Effient (prasugrel), and aspirin. Only your physician can make a change in your medication regimen and determine the best drug for you, taking into account your medical history and medical conditions, and other drugs you take that could interact with antiplatelet drugs.
