Is there a generic of Stelara?

Stelara is a brand-name prescription medication manufactured by Janssen Biotech Inc. Ustekinumab is the active ingredient in Stelara.

What is Stelara?

Stelara (ustekinumab) is a brand-name prescription drug approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for the treatment of plaque psoriasis, psoriatic arthritis, and moderate to severe Crohn's disease or ulcerative colitis in adults. It can also be used in children 6 and older for plaque psoriasis or psoriatic arthritis.

Stelara is classified as an immunosuppressant that blocks the naturally produced body proteins, interleukin-12 and interleukin-23, which cause inflammation.

Always read the medication guide and consult your healthcare provider for medical advice concerning the correct dosage and frequency for your medical condition. Before using Stelara, your healthcare provider will test you to ensure you have no other infections. This medication can be infused into a vein or injected under the skin. A healthcare provider will administer the first dose and may teach you how to properly inject Stelara under the skin for future doses.

Always ensure there is no discoloration, cloudiness, or particles before administering this medication. Stelara should not be injected into the same area consecutively or into the skin that is damaged, swollen, or red. Dosages are based on weight and may require adjustment by your healthcare provider if you experience a change in weight. While taking Stelara, you should not receive any live vaccines.

What are the side effects of Stelara?

Some common side effects include headache, stomach problems (pain, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea), back pain, joint pain, fatigue, or infection. Injection site reactions such as bruising, swelling, itching, pain, and redness may occur.

Severe allergic reactions to Stelara are not common. However, get emergency medical help if you experience hives, trouble breathing or swallowing, or swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat.

Serious side effects are possible because Stelara affects your immune system. Severe infections may occur, including tuberculosis or other infections caused by viruses, bacteria, or fungi. While taking Stelara, report signs of infection to your doctor, such as fever, chills, muscle aches, cough, skin sores, fatigue, shortness of breath, weight loss, or burning when you urinate.

Individuals with a genetic condition where the body does not make any of the proteins interleukin 12 (IL-12) and interleukin 23 (IL-23) are at increased risk for certain serious infections, which can cause death. People who take Stelara may also be at higher risk for these types of infections.

Certain types of cancer, such as skin cancer, may also occur in people who take Stelara.

A rare and possibly fatal condition known as Posterior Reversible Encephalopathy Syndrome (PRES) may occur. The cause of PRES is unknown, but if it is found and treated early, most people recover. Symptoms to be aware of include seizures, headache, confusion, or changes in vision.

This is not a full list of side effects, and others may occur. Consult your doctor for additional information and questions about Stelara before you start treatment.

How is Stelara different from Humira?

Stelara and Humira are both biologic medicines used to treat certain autoimmune conditions. Stelara is classified as a human interleukin-12 and -23 antagonist, while Humira is classified as a tumor necrosis factor (TNF) blocker.

Either medication can be used to treat plaque psoriasis, psoriatic arthritis, Crohn’s disease, or ulcerative colitis. Additionally, Humira has some other indications, including rheumatoid arthritis,  juvenile idiopathic arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, hidradenitis suppurativa, and uveitis.

Stelara and Humira are medications that are generally used when other treatments have not been effective. Both medications have benefits and risks to consider. Consult your healthcare provider for more information about these medications.
