What is Zithranol?

Zithranol is a prescription shampoo that relieves itching, swelling, and redness due to moderate to severe scalp psoriasis, a condition in which skin cells grow too actively and build up into dry and itchy patches. The active ingredient in Zithranol, anthralin (dithranol), is derived from a substance that comes from trees in Brazil and has been used for over a century as an effective psoriasis treatment. Anthralin relieves psoriasis by slowing the growth of skin cells.

Zithranol is applied to the wet scalp three to five times a week. Once lathered into the hair, Zithranol should remain on the scalp for five minutes before being rinsed off.

What are the side effects of Zithranol?

Anthralin is not absorbed into the body, so it does not have system-wide side effects as other psoriasis treatments do. Site reactions include skin irritation, hair staining, and skin discoloration. Very few allergic reactions have been reported, but you should discontinue Zithranol if you notice a rash, hives, swelling, or any other sign of an allergic reaction.
