Amneal Pharmaceuticals LLC, Mylan Pharmaceuticals Inc., Teva Pharmaceuticals USA, Inc. are some manufacturers of Acitretin. Acitretin is sold under the brand-name drugs Soriatane and Soriatane CK.

What is Acitretin?

Acitretin is a member of the antipsoriatics drug class and is commonly used for pityriasis rubra pilaris or severe psoriasis. Acitretin is a retinoid, which is a form of vitamin A and works by stopping excessive growth and thickening of skin cells. The thickening is called keratinization and occurs due to a buildup of a protein called keratin in the cells.

You should not take this prescription drug if you have severe liver disease or severe kidney disease, you have high levels of cholesterol or triglycerides (a type of fat) in your blood, you are pregnant or breastfeeding, you are also using methotrexate, or you also use tetracycline antibiotic (such as demeclocycline, doxycycline, minocycline, tetracycline, and others).

Acitretin causes extreme birth defects, so you should never use this drug if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant. Women of childbearing age should only use Acitretin if they are not pregnant or planning to become pregnant, and if other treatments have not worked or cannot be tolerated. If you are a woman, you will have to use two effective birth control methods and undergo required pregnancy testing—monthly while taking this medicine, and every 3 months for at least 3 years after your last dose.

Additionally, people (male or females) should not donate blood while taking Acitretin and for at least 3 years after the last dose. If donated blood is given to pregnant women, it can result in birth defects.

Your healthcare professional will give you more information about Acitretin and pregnancy, and enroll you in the Do Your P.A.R.T. (Pregnancy Prevention Actively Required During and After Treatment) program.
