Copaxone is a brand-name drug that is manufactured by Teva Neuroscience, Inc. The generic version of Copaxone is glatiramer.
Copaxone is used to treat multiple sclerosis, a disease that is caused by your immune system attacking the nerves in the brain and spinal cord. This leads to inflammation and damage to parts of your central nervous system. Copaxone is thought to work by preventing such attacks on nerve cells (myelin). Although by doing this, the number of relapses of the disease can be reduced, multiple sclerosis is not cured.
Copaxone is indicated for the treatment of patients with relapsing forms of multiple sclerosis, including clinically isolated syndrome, relapsing-remitting disease, and active secondary progressive disease. Copaxone is approved for use in adults. It is not approved for use in children under 18 years old.
Copaxone is available in the form of an injection that is given directly under the skin (subcutaneous injection). There are two available doses for this prescription medication. It is either given three times a week, with the minimum time between doses being 48 hours, or once a day. The schedule is based on the product strength that your doctor selects.
Discuss with your doctor or healthcare provider about all your medical conditions, allergies, and all the medicines you use to ensure this prescription medicine is suitable for you. To get the most benefit from it, use this medication regularly as instructed by your doctor. Do not change your dose or stop using this medication without first talking with your doctor. Contact your doctor or pharmacist for additional information.
Side effects of Copaxone may include flushing, rash, shortness of breath, chest pain, infection, weakness, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, flu, anxiety, back pain, common cold, palpitations, swelling of the extremities, swollen lymph nodes, excess sweating, fast heart rate, and throat pain.
At the injection site, you may experience erythema (redness), inflammation, and pain or itching.
A rare but serious side effect of Copaxone is an immediate post-injection reaction. Symptoms may include flushing, chest pain, palpitations, fast heart rate, hives, shortness of breath, or anxiety. These symptoms, or symptoms of an allergic reaction that occur at any time, require emergency medical attention. Symptoms of an allergic reaction may include hives, difficulty breathing, or swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat.
Liver problems such as liver injury or liver failure may also occur. Get medical help if you have nausea, appetite loss, confusion, dark urine, pale stools, or yellowing of the skin or whites of the eyes.
This is not a complete list of side effects and others may occur—inform your doctor if you experience any other side effects while taking Copaxone.
