Armodafinil, also known by its brand name Nuvigil, belongs to a class of drugs called wakefulness-promoting agents. It is chemically similar to another drug called modafinil, which is the generic version of Provigil. It is believed to work by blocking the reuptake and thus increasing the levels of dopamine in the brain. This drug has stimulant-like effects to help reduce daytime drowsiness in those with narcolepsy, obstructive sleep apnea, and sleep work disorder.

Armodafinil comes as a 50 mg, 150 mg, 200 mg, or 250 mg oral tablet. It is generally taken once daily. Older adults and people with liver problems may be started on a lower dose than normal.

Armodafinil is a Schedule IV drug that may carry a risk of abuse and dependence. This medication should only be used as directed by a doctor or healthcare provider. Tell your doctor about any medical conditions you may have and other drugs you may be taking.
