What is Aubagio?

Aubagio is a brand-name prescription drug used to treat multiple sclerosis, a progressive and degenerative condition in which the immune system attacks healthy nerve tissues in the brain, spinal cord, and optic nerve. As the nerves deteriorate, the brain and spinal cord are unable to send signals to the muscles in the body, and the patient becomes physically disabled. As the disease progresses, healthy and functioning nerve tissues in the brain, spinal cord, and optic nerve are replaced with scars (sclerosis).

When the immune system “attacks” tissues in the brain or spinal cord, the first thing that happens is the proliferation of activated lymphocytes, the white blood cells that produce antibodies. Activated lymphocytes divide rapidly into other activated lymphocytes and they all start producing antibodies, which are proteins that stick to “foreign” cells and essentially paint a target on them. Other white blood cells gather around the targeted cells and destroy them The chemicals they use are the same that cause the swelling (inflammation) that destroys nerve tissues in patients with MS.

The active ingredient in Aubagio, teriflunomide, interferes with the ability of lymphocytes to get enough energy to reproduce themselves and produce enough antibodies to successfully attack joint tissues.

Aubagio is administered as a tablet once daily. Aubagio is intended for continuous administration until the patient cannot tolerate Aubagio.
