What is Ella?

Ella is an emergency contraceptive used by women within five days after having sexual intercourse to prevent pregnancy. Ella can also be taken if a woman has unprotected intercourse or if regular birth control fails. It works by stopping or delaying the release of an egg from the ovary.Ella makes it more difficult for a fertilized egg (zygote) to attach itself to the uterus. Ella belongs to the progesterone receptor modulators drug class which are commonly used for emergency contraception. Its active ingredients include ulipristal acetate.

This women's prescription drug is not to be used regularly as a daily/weekly/monthly birth control. Ella is not an abortion pill and it is not to be used to terminate an existing pregnancy. Ella will not protect you or your partner from sexually transmitted infections. Ella can harm an unborn baby or cause birth defects. Do not use Ella if you are already pregnant or think you might be pregnant. Ella can pass into breast milk and cause harm to a nursing baby. You should not breastfeed while using this medicine.

Tell your doctor right away if you experience any serious symptoms like severe lower stomach pain. Acne breakouts and pimples may also result from using Ella.
