What is Gemfibrozil?

Gemfibrozil is a generic prescription drug, used along with diet, to reduce fats in the blood (triglycerides) and, as a result, cholesterol. It is prescribed to patients who, because of high triglyceride levels are at risk of developing pancreatitis, or inflammation of the pancreas. It is also commonly used to reduce the risk of stroke, heart attack, and other heart complications in patients with high triglycerides, high LDL cholesterol, and low HDL cholesterol.

Gemfibrozil is not a statin drug, the most commonly prescribed drug for high cholesterol. Unlike a statin, Gemfibrozil works by reducing the liver's production of triglycerides.

Before you take Gemfibrozil, talk to your doctor about any medical conditions you have, as well as all of the medicines you take, including Rx and OTC medications, vitamins, and supplements. This information will help your doctor decide if Gemfibrozil is safe for you to take.

What are the side effects of Gemfibrozil?

Common side effects of Gemfibrozil include but are not limited to stomach discomfort, stomach acid, heartburn, diarrhea, and fatigue.

In some cases, Gemfibrozil may cause gallstones or liver damage. Gemfibrozil can sometimes causeimpotence, difficulty achieving orgasm, and a loss of sexual desire.

Allergic reactions are uncommon but include rashes, hives, or difficulty breathing. Get emergency medical attention if you have signs of an allergic reaction.

This is not a complete list of side effects. Consult your doctor or healthcare professional for additional information and medical advice regarding other possible side effects or drug interactions. You can also report negative side effects to the FDA.
