Vascepa is a brand-name drug. Icosapent ethyl is the Vascepa generic alternative. A SingleCare savings card can be used at your local pharmacy on either the brand or the generic.
Vascepa is an omega-3 fatty acid that may be used in individuals with high triglycerides (≥ 150 mg/dL) who also have heart disease, or who have diabetes and two or more additional risk factors for heart disease. In these patients, Vascepa should be taken along with a high-dose statin (such as Lipitor). Vascepa may also be used along with diet in patients with severely high triglyceride levels (≥ 500 mg/dL).
Vascepa is NOT a statin. Statins include drugs like Lipitor (atorvastatin), Zocor (simvastatin), and Crestor (rosuvastatin). Although Vascepa is not a statin, it is often prescribed in conjunction with a statin. Your prescriber will decide which medication(s) are appropriate for you based on your lab tests, conditions, and history, as well as other medications you take. When using Vascepa, you should also maintain a low-fat, low-cholesterol diet and exercise regularly (as approved by your doctor) to ensure that your triglyceride levels do not increase. Check with your doctor about restrictions to consider when taking Vascepa.
Vascepa capsules are available in 0.5 gram and 1 gram. It is recommended that you take Vascepa with food, but your doctor may have more specific instructions for your Vascepa dosage depending on your medical condition and response to treatment. Discuss your current list of medications (including over-the-counter products and herbal supplements) to avoid drug interactions.
Joint pain or muscle pain, constipation, swelling of the hands or legs, irregular heartbeat, and gout are common side effects that you may experience with Vascepa.
Since the active ingredient in Vascepa is found in fish oil, you should let your doctor know if you are allergic to fish oil or other kinds of shellfish. If you notice that you are experiencing an allergic reaction to Vascepa you should go to a nearby hospital right away for emergency medical help. Signs of an allergic reaction include hives, difficulty breathing, or swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat.
Other serious side effects of Vascepa may occur. Consult your healthcare provider for more information about side effects, and/or for professional medical advice should you experience side effects while taking Vascepa.
Before taking Vascepa, review your medications with your doctor. This includes prescription medications, OTC drugs, vitamins, and supplements.
People who take blood thinners such as Coumadin (warfarin), Xarelto (rivaroxaban), or Eliquis (apixaban), or antiplatelet drugs such as Plavix (clopidogrel) may be at risk for bleeding when taking Vascepa, and will be monitored. Certain blood thinners such as Lovenox (enoxaparin) or Arixtra (fondaparinux) should not be combined with Vascepa; an alternative will be prescribed. Your healthcare provider or pharmacist can give you more details about drug interactions.
Vascepa is not safe for everyone. Anyone who is allergic to icosapent ethyl should not take Vascepa. Also, Vascepa should be prescribed cautiously to certain people. Vascepa contraindications include:
People who are allergic to fish and/or shellfish
People with liver problems
People with atrial fibrillation or atrial flutter
People who are at risk for bleeding
Instead of Vascepa, some healthcare providers will prescribe Lovaza (omega-3-acid ethyl esters), or recommend over-the-counter fish oil supplements. However, Lovaza may also increase LDL levels, which can be troublesome for those at risk for heart disease. Vascepa does not affect LDL levels.
Fenofibrate (under brand names such as Tricor and Lipofen, among others) is another drug that treats high triglyceride levels. Your healthcare provider will prescribe the most appropriate medication for you.
Your healthcare provider will tell you how to take Vascepa. The dosage is generally 2 grams twice a day, which is usually taken as four 0.5 gram capsules twice a day with food—or two, 1 gram capsules twice a day with food.
Store Vascepa at room temperature, away from direct light, heat, and moisture. Keep out of reach and out of sight of children and pets.
In the event of a missed Vascepa dose, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed dose. Do not double up on doses. Check with your healthcare provider or pharmacist if you are unsure what to do if you miss a dose.
