What is Lopid?

Lopid is a prescription drug formulated to reduce fats in the blood (triglycerides) and, as a result, cholesterol. It is prescribed to patients who, because of high triglyceride levels, are at risk of developing pancreatitis, or inflammation of the pancreas. It is also commonly used to reduce cholesterol for patients with high cholesterol.

Lopid is not a statin drug, the most commonly prescribed drug for high cholesterol, but a fibrate. Unlike a statin, fibrates do not work by reducing the liver's production of cholesterol, but by reducing the liver's production of fats (triglycerides). LDL cholesterol, which causes plaque build-up in the arteries, serves to move triglycerides into cells. As triglyceride levels drop, the body produces less LDL cholesterol.

What are the side effects of Lopid?

Common side effects of Lopid include but are not limited to stomach discomfort, stomach acid, heartburn, diarrhea, and tingly or itchy sensations on the skin. In some cases, Lopid may cause gallstones or liver damage. Allergic reactions are uncommon but include rashes, hives, or difficulty breathing. Mood changes are rare, but Lopid can commonly cause a loss of sexual desire, impotence, and difficulty achieving orgasm.
