What is Metafolbic Plus?
Metafolbic Plus is a brand-name prescription dietary supplement. It is prescribed to patients with mild cognitive impairment and memory loss due to Alzheimer's and other neurological illnesses. It is also prescribed to patients with hyperhomocysteinemia, or excess homocysteine, or to patients with a vitamin B12 deficiency that cannot be effectively treated with dietary changes.
Memory loss and cognitive impairment are often due to the death of neurons caused by the oxidizing activities of free radicals. Cysteine clears free radicals from the body and also regulates a chemical in the brain, glutamate, that, in excess, can cause brain damage.
Metafolbic Plus's active ingredients include N-acetylcysteine (NAC, a man-made form of cysteine) and methylfolate (vitamin B9), which is needed by the body to produce cysteine. Metafolbic Plus also includes vitamin B12 (methylcobalamin).
Metafolbic Plus is taken as a tablet once per day.
What are the side effects of Metafolbic Plus?
Metafolbic Plus side effects are rare. Uncommon side effects include but are not limited to rash, discomfort, diarrhea, and depression.
