Kerendia is a prescription drug that treats chronic kidney disease in adults with Type 2 diabetes. Risk factors for the progression of CKD include poorly controlled blood sugar, poorly controlled blood pressure, and inflammation or scarring of the kidneys. Kerendia slows the progression of kidney disease and reduces the risk of kidney failure as well as cardiovascular complications.
Note: Kerendia is not a replacement for diabetes or high blood pressure medications.
The most common side effects of Kerendia are high potassium levels (hyperkalemia), low blood pressure (hypotension), and low sodium levels (hyponatremia).
Hyperkalemia is usually asymptomatic until potassium levels are dangerously high. People with reduced kidney function and high potassium levels may be at a higher risk than others. Seek medical attention if you experience heart palpitations, irregular heartbeat, muscle weakness or paralysis, numbness, tingling, or burning sensations.
Symptoms of hypotension include dizziness or lightheadedness, fainting, heart palpitations, blurred vision, fatigue, depression, lack of concentration, nausea, dehydration or thirst, rapid breathing, and cold, clammy, or pale skin.
Hyponatremia is also asymptomatic until sodium levels are severely low or drop rapidly. Call your healthcare provider if you experience nausea, headache, tiredness, dizziness, muscle cramps, or weakness.
Kerendia is an oral tablet taken once per day. It is available in 10 mg and 20 mg strengths. The exact dosage will depend on overall kidney function and potassium levels. Seek medical advice from a healthcare professional on the appropriate dosage before starting treatment. Always follow the instructions and prescribing information given by your healthcare provider.
