Np Thyroid is a prescription drug used to treat patients with an underactive thyroid (hypothyroidism). It is made from animal thyroid glands and combines levothyroxine and liothyronine. It replaces or provides more thyroid hormone, which is normally produced by the thyroid gland.
Np Thyroid can also be used to treat other types of thyroid disorders such as certain types of goiters, thyroid cancer, as well as to test for thyroid function.
This medication should not be used to treat obesity or weight problems.
Before taking Np Thyroid, tell your doctor about all of the medications you take, including prescription drugs, OTC medicines, and vitamins or supplements. Np Thyroid interacts with certain drugs. Np Thyroid may interact with birth control pills, hormone replacement therapy, blood thinners, insulin, oral diabetes medicine, aspirin, steroids, and others.
Np Thyroid should not be used if you have adrenal insufficiency, untreated thyrotoxicosis (excess of thyroid hormone in the body), a recent heart attack, or hypersensitivity to any ingredients found in this product. In older adults and in patients with cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure, or diabetes, Np Thyroid should be used with caution. In patients with diabetes mellitus or adrenal cortical insufficiency, this drug may cause their symptoms to get worse.
Excessive use of Np Thyroid in infants may produce a birth defect called craniosynostosis (when the bones in a baby's skull join together too early.)
It can take two or three weeks to see the effects of Np Thyroid, but it could take up to six weeks to see the full effect of this medication.
Common side effects of Np Thyroid include fast heart rate, irregular heartbeat, trouble sleeping, nervousness, headache, diarrhea, tremor, and heat intolerance. Contact your healthcare provider if you experience any of these side effects.
In rare cases, serious side effects such as a severe allergic reaction may occur in rare cases. Seek emergency medical help if you notice any signs of an allergic reaction, such as hives, swelling of the tongue or throat, or trouble breathing.
Contact your healthcare provider if you have signs of thyroid toxicity. Symptoms may include chest pain, fast or pounding heartbeat, nervousness, excess sweating, and feeling hot.
