Is there a generic of Tirosint?

Tirosint is a brand-name prescription drug that may have a generic version. Levothyroxine is the active ingredient in Tirosint and can be found in other brand-name drugs such as Synthroid and Levoxyl.

What is Tirosint?

Tirosint is used to treat low levels of thyroid hormones. Hypothyroidism is a condition that results in an underactive thyroid gland that doesn’t produce enough thyroid hormone. Tirosint works by replenishing levels of thyroid hormones that are needed by the body to function. Symptoms of a deficiency in thyroid hormones may include fatigue, muscle weakness, and weight gain, among others. Patients diagnosed with hypothyroidism can sometimes have an enlarged thyroid gland (goiter). In addition to hypothyroidism, Tirosint can treat thyroid cancer.

What doses of Tirosint are available?

Tirosint is available as an oral capsule in strengths that range from 13 mcg to 200 mcg. Tirosint is prescribed as a once-daily pill that is taken on an empty stomach, usually 30 minutes to an hour before breakfast. It should also be taken four hours before or after taking other medications that may affect its absorption. Do not crush, chew, or cut the capsules. Your doctor or healthcare provider will determine the right dosage for you.

What are the side effects of Tirosint?

Side effects of Tirosint may include headache, nervousness, fatigue, weight loss, increased appetite, diarrhea, vomiting, hair loss, menstrual changes, and muscle spasm. Serious side effects of Tirosint are generally caused by taking too much Tirosint at one time. These side effects may include chest pain and an irregular heart rhythm.

Tirosint may also worsen blood sugar levels in people with diabetes and decrease bone mineral density. Inform your doctor or healthcare provider about any abnormal bodily changes that you experience while taking Tirosint. Your healthcare provider can tell you more about other side effects of Tirosint.

Does Tirosint cause hair loss?

Hair loss can be a side effect of Tirosint, but it's relatively rare. In most cases, hair loss occurs during the initial stages of treatment and is usually temporary. Hair growth often returns to normal as the body adjusts to the medication and hormone levels stabilize. If you experience hair loss while taking Tirosint, talk to your healthcare provider. They may adjust your dosage or recommend alternative treatments.

What are Tirosint alternatives?

There are several alternatives to Tirosint for treating hypothyroidism. These medications may contain synthetic thyroid hormones or have different formulations. Some common alternatives include:

  • Generic levothyroxine: This is a widely prescribed medication for hypothyroidism and is available in various strengths. Other brand names for levothyroxine include Synthroid, Levoxyl, and Unithroid.

  • Cytomel (liothyronine): This medication contains T3, another thyroid hormone, and may be prescribed in combination with levothyroxine for patients who don't respond well to levothyroxine alone.

  • Natural Desiccated Thyroid: Natural desiccated thyroid is derived from the thyroid glands of pigs and contains both T4 and T3 hormones. Brand names include Armour Thyroid, Nature-Throid, and WP Thyroid.

Your healthcare provider will determine the best option based on your needs and medical history. Follow your doctor's recommendations and attend regular check-ups to monitor your thyroid hormone levels.
