Is there a generic for Unithroid?

Unithroid is a brand-name prescription drug that is manufactured by Amneal Pharmaceuticals. Generic versions of Unithroid are available. Levothyroxine is the generic version of Unithroid. Your healthcare provider will decide which drug is the best for your medical condition.

What is Unithroid?

Unithroid is a treatment used by patients with hypothyroidism (underactive thyroid) or certain types of thyroid cancer. Your doctor can diagnose you with hypothyroidism if your thyroid gland does not make enough thyroid hormone, which your body needs to function properly.

Unithroid contains a synthetic version of thyroxine called levothyroxine, which may help restore your body's hormonal balance and get your thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) level where it needs to be. Unithroid works by replacing thyroid hormone that is normally made by the body.

Unithroid prescription medication is available as a tablet that is taken by mouth and is available in the following dosages: 25 mcg, 50mcg, 75 mcg, 88 mcg, 100 mcg, 112 mcg, 125 mcg, 137 mcg, 150 mcg, 175 mcg, 200 mcg, and 300 mcg. Take your Unithroid tablet on an empty stomach once daily, 30 to 60 minutes before breakfast. Swallow the tablet whole with a full glass of water.

Your doctor will create a therapy plan that is unique to you. After you have started therapy with Unithroid, your treatment may take between four to six weeks before you notice any improvement in your symptoms of hypothyroidism.

Before taking Unithroid, make sure your healthcare provider knows about all of your medical conditions, as well as the medications you take. This includes prescription and over-the-counter (OTC) drugs, vitamins, and dietary supplements. Before you take your first prescription of Unithroid, be sure to follow your prescription guide or healthcare professional’s instructions on how to take your medication.

What are the side effects of Unithroid?

The side effects you may experience when using Unithroid are usually due to too-high doses of Unithroid, which may cause hyperthyroidism (overactive thyroid). Although this is not a complete list of Unithroid side effects, if your Unithroid dose is too high, you may have rapid or irregular heartbeat, increased appetite, extreme sensitivity to heat, changes in menstrual periods, weight loss, muscle weakness, skin rash, headaches, insomnia (trouble sleeping), nervousness, irritability, diarrhea, and/or chest pain.

You should not take Unithroid if you are allergic to any of the ingredients. If you have symptoms of an allergic reaction, such as hives, difficulty breathing, or swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat, get emergency medical help.

Be sure to seek medical advice or tell your healthcare provider immediately if you experience any of the side effects listed above, as your treatment may last a lifetime.
