Rytary is an FDA-approved prescription drug used to treat the symptoms of Parkinson's disease such as stiffness, shakiness, and difficulty moving.
Parkinson's disease is generally thought to be caused by a shortage of dopamine in the brain. Rytary contains a combination of carbidopa-levodopa that addresses this shortage. Levodopa turns into dopamine in the brain and helps to control movement. Carbidopa prevents levodopa from breaking down in the bloodstream, allowing more levodopa to enter the brain. Carbidopa also helps to reduce some side effects of levodopa such as vomiting and nausea.
Rytary comes in the form of an oral tablet and should only be used as prescribed by your healthcare provider. Use this medication regularly to get the most benefit. You can maximize its effects by taking it at the same time each day. Do not change your dose or take an additional medication without consulting your doctor first.
Common side effects that may occur from using Rytary include nausea, dizziness, dry mouth, vomiting, trouble sleeping, and headaches. Patients who take Rytary for an extended period of time are at an increased risk of dyskinesia, or abnormal, involuntary movements. If you experience any of these side effects and they persist or worsen, you should contact your doctor or pharmacist immediately.
This medication may cause sweat, urine, or saliva to turn red, black, or brown. This effect is not harmful but may cause your clothes to become stained.
Some people using this medication have suddenly fallen asleep during their normal daily activities. In some cases, sleep would have occurred without any feelings of drowsiness. If you feel increased feelings of sleepiness, do not drive or take part in other dangerous activities until you have spoken with your doctor.
This is not a full list of side effects, therefore, others may occur while taking this medication. Talk to your healthcare professional for medical advice about the possible risks and benefits of using this drug.
