About Bromocriptine Mesylate

Parlodel is an FDA-approved brand-name prescription drug that treats three different conditions. First, it reduces the levels of the hormone prolactin in the body when it's too high (hyperprolactinemia). Second, it is used alone or with other treatments to reduce the levels of growth hormone when it's too high (acromegaly). Finally, Parlodel acts like dopamine, a critical “signaling” chemical in the brain, when dopamine is too low (Parkinson's disease).

The active ingredient in Parlodel, bromocriptine, locks itself on to nerve cells so that the “correct” signals are sent to the glands that produce prolactin and growth hormone and, for Parkinson's, allow the brain to control muscle movement. Continue to our FAQs section for more information about Parlodel: how it works, possible side effects, how much Parlodel costs, and how you can save money on your Parlodel prescription. For instance, while the retail price of Parlodel is normally $51.99, a SingleCare Parlodel coupon reduces that price to $36.94. Find out more about this and other ways to save money below.

Is there a generic of Parlodel?

Parlodel is a brand-name drug and is available as generic bromocriptine from Mylan, Paddock, Sandoz, and other generic manufacturers.

What is Parlodel?

Parlodel is a brand-name prescription drug that treats excessive production of the hormone prolactin, excessive production of growth hormone, or the symptoms of Parkinson's disease, a progressive brain disorder that causes involuntary muscle movements, loss of coordination, and difficulty walking or balancing.

The active ingredient in Parlodel, bromocriptine, attaches to nerve cells so that the “correct” signals are sent to the glands that produce prolactin and growth hormone and, for Parkinson's, allow the brain to control muscle movement.

Bromocriptine is taken as a capsule or tablet with food. The dose will depend on the condition and its severity. Before taking bromocriptine, tell your doctor about all of your medical conditions and medical history. Tell your doctor about all of the drugs you take, including Rx and OTC drugs, vitamins, and supplements.

What are the side effects of Parlodel?

While not a complete list of side effects, the most common side effects include nausea, headache, dizziness, drowsiness, appetite loss, and a stuffy nose. Patients taking bromocriptine may also feel lightheaded and/or have a drop in blood pressure when sitting or standing up. Sit or stand up slowly, while holding on to something for support, if this occurs. Stomach problems like abdominal pain, indigestion, vomiting, and diarrea or constipation may occur.  Allergic reactions are uncommon but include hives and trouble breathing and require emergency medical attention. This is not a complete list of side effects. Consult your doctor or healthcare professional for additional information and medical advice regarding other possible side effects or drug interactions. You can report negative side effects to the FDA.
