Carbidopa-Levodopa Er is a combination prescription drug that treats Parkinson's disease, a progressive brain disorder that results in too little dopamine, a chemical critical to transmitting nerve signals, in the brain. The shortage of dopamine in the brain produces all the classic symptoms of Parkinson's: involuntary muscle movements (dyskinesia), loss of coordination, and difficulty walking or balancing.
The combination of levodopa and carbidopa are prescribed to replace dopamine in the brain and are the first and most common drug treatment for Parkinson's. Levodopa is the molecule the brain uses to build dopamine. Carbidopa is taken with levodopa to prevent the body from breaking down levodopa before it has a chance to reach the brain.
Carbidopa-Levodopa Er is taken as a tablet. The dosage and the ratio of carbidopa and levodopa will depend on the needs of the patient. The ratio of carbidopa to levodopa in the tablet will be 1:4 (25 mg / 100 mg) or 1:10 (25 mg / 250 mg). Tablets of different ratios may be prescribed to achieve the optimal balance between carbidopa and levodopa and the optimal dose.
The most common side effects of Carbidopa-Levodopa Er are involuntary movements and nausea. Other side effects include are dry mouth, upset stomach, headache, dizziness, drowsiness, insomnia, weight changes, loss of appetite, muscle pain, and diarrhea.
Mental and mood changes include confusion, paranoia, unusual thoughts, unusual behaviors, psychosis (hallucinations, delusions, paranoid ideas), depression, suicidal thoughts, and unusually strong compulsions.
