Lumigan is used to treat high pressure in the eye associated with open-angle glaucoma or ocular hypertension. Lumigan works by regulating the flow of fluids from your eye.
Lumigan is available in the form of an eye drop solution. It is supplied in 2.5 mL, 5 mL, and 7.5 mL dropper bottles. The usual dosage is one drop in the affected eye(s) once daily in the evening. Your health care provider will give you specific dosage instructions and related medical advice for Lumigan.
Lumigan is usually taken once a day, in the evening. If you miss a dose, skip the missed dose and take the next dose at the regularly scheduled time. Do not use extra eye drops.
Although results will vary in each patient, a 12-month clinical study concluded that Lumigan lowered intraocular pressure by up to 7.5 mmHg.
Common side effects include burning, stinging, irritation, and redness of the eye (conjunctival hyperemia). Lumigan may also cause dry eyes, watery eyes, or increased sensitivity to light. Using Lumigan can also result in discoloration of the iris, eyelash growth, and blurred or decreased vision.
This is not a complete list of side effects. Seek medical advice if you are experiencing one or more of these side effects. Disclose your allergies to your doctor, as it is possible to have an allergic reaction to any of the active ingredients in Lumigan. If you have symptoms of a serious allergic reaction, such as hives, difficulty breathing, or swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat, get emergency medical help.
Lumigan contains benzalkonium chloride, which can be absorbed by soft contact lenses and cause discoloration. Before placing drops into the eye, remove contact lenses. You can reinsert them 15 minutes after you put the eye drops in.
Besides Lumigan, there are various eye drops that are used for glaucoma. Lumigan is in a drug class called prostaglandin analogs. Other prosgaglandin analogs include Xalatan (latanoprost), Travatan Z (travoprost), and Zioptan (tafluprost).
There are other drug classes for glaucoma as well, such as beta blockers like timolol, alpha agonists like Alphagan P (brimonidine tartrate), carbonic anhydrase inhibitors like Trusopt (dorzolamide), and rho khinase inhibitors like Rhopressa.
There are also several combination drugs available that combine drugs from two classes of medications, such as Cosopt, which contains timolol and dorzolamide.
Your healthcare provider will assess which treatment is appropriate for you.
