What is Cosopt?

Cosopt is a combination prescription eye drop that is used to lower intraocular pressure (eye pressure) in patients with open-angle glaucoma or ocular hypertension. Cosopt contains dorzolamide hydrochloride (a carbonic anhydrase inhibitor), which reduces the amount of fluid in the eye, and timolol maleate (a beta blocker), which reduces pressure inside the eye. It is not known if Cosopt is safe for patients who are under two years old. You could also ask your eye doctor about Cosopt PF which comes in single-use, preservative-free containers.

Do not use Cosopt if you are allergic to any part of this medication.

Before you use Cosopt, tell your doctor if you have any other medical conditions including a history of asthma, severe lung problems such as COPD, or heart problems. It may not be safe for you to use Cosopt with any of these conditions. If you are on other medications you should provide your doctor with a list of them, including prescription medications, over-the-counter treatments, vitamins, and supplements. This will minimize your risk of drug interactions and adverse side effects.

You should use Cosopt exactly as your doctor tells you to. Deviating from your prescription could minimize the effectiveness of Cosopt. Cosopt is meant to be used in your eyes only. If you swallow this medication call your doctor or Poison Control immediately.

Do not use Cosopt if you are wearing soft contact lenses, because the medication can permanently stain contact lenses. Use Cosopt at least 15 minutes before you put in your contact lenses. Also, if you are using any other eye drops, wait 5 minutes after using Cosopt. Wash your hands before using Cosopt. To avoid contamination, infection, and serious vision problems, do not touch the tip of the eyedropper and do not place the dropper directly into the eye.

The most common side effects of Cosopt include a bitter, sour, or unusual taste in your mouth, or burning and/or stinging in the eye(s). Other common side effects may include eye redness/inflammation or itching, blurred vision, or other eye problems. Notify your doctor right away if you have any vision changes or other problems with the eye(s). Tell your doctor right away if you have an eye injury or infection or if you need surgery. Cosopt can cause serious breathing problems or heart failure. If you have shortness of breath, rapid/pounding heartbeat, sudden weight gain, or swelling of your ankles and feet, you should get medical help right away.

Severe allergic reactions or severe skin reactions are rare and require immediate emergency medical attention.
