What is the brand name of Furosemide?

Furosemide is manufactured by Amneal Pharmaceuticals LLC, Luitpold Pharmaceuticals, Inc., Mylan Pharmaceuticals Inc., and others. The brand-name version of Furosemide is called Lasix.

What is Furosemide?

Furosemide is a loop diuretic (water pill) that prevents your body from absorbing excessive salt and allows the salt to be passed in your urine instead. Furosemide is used to treat fluid retention (edema) in people with congestive heart failure, liver disease, or a kidney disorder such as nephrotic syndrome. Furosemide may also be prescribed to treat high blood pressure.

Your health care provider will want to ensure that Furosemide is right for you. To assist in this process, inform your doctor if you have any medical conditions, especially kidney disease, enlarged prostate, bladder obstruction, urination problems, cirrhosis or other liver disease, an electrolyte imbalance (such as low levels of potassium or magnesium in your blood), gout, lupus, diabetes, sulfa drug allergy, or an MRI or any type of scan using a radioactive dye that is injected into your veins.

Your doctor should also know about all of the medications you take, including over-the-counter drugs, prescription medicines, vitamins, and supplements.

While using Furosemide, avoid getting up too fast from a sitting or lying position. Also, avoid becoming dehydrated. Do not drink alcohol while taking Furosemide.

Take Furosemide exactly as directed. Taking too much Furosemide can cause irreversible hearing loss.

What are the side effects of Furosemide?

Some common side effects that you may experience while using Furosemide include urinary frequency, dizziness, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, weakness, muscle cramps, blurred vision, ringing in the ears, appetite loss, and orthostatic hypotension. Orthostatic hypotension is a drop in blood pressure when standing up from a sitting or lying down position. Low levels of potassium, magnesium, and calcium may also occur.

Serious allergic reactions to this drug are rare, however, you should be alert to possible signs of an allergic reaction. These may include rash, itching, swelling (especially of the face, tongue, or throat), severe dizziness, or trouble breathing. Get emergency medical attention if any of these symptoms occur.

This is not a complete list of side effects so get medical advice from your doctor before using Furosemide to determine if it is right for you.

What can I take instead of Furosemide?

If you are looking to change to an alternative to Furosemide, there are other options available. Other loop diuretics, like Furosemide, include Bumex (bumetanide) or Demadex (torsemide). There are also thiazide diuretics, such as hydrochlorothiazide, or potassium-sparing diuretics such as Aldactone (spironolactone). There are also various other drugs for heart failure or high blood pressure that may be more appropriate. Consult your healthcare provider for more information and to decide which medicine is right for you.
