What is Spironolactone?

Spironolactone is a diuretic that is used to treat high blood pressure, heart failure, and hyperaldosteronism (overproduction of aldosterone). It can also be used to treat edema from nephrotic syndrome, kidney problems, or liver cirrhosis. Spironolactone works by causing your body to make more urine and lose excess water. Spironolactone reduces how much potassium is removed from the body.

Spironolactone is available as a generic oral tablet in strengths of 25 mg, 50 mg, and 100 mg. It is usually taken once or twice daily. The appropriate dosage will depend on the condition being treated. Spironolactone should only be used as prescribed. Consult your doctor or pharmacist on the proper way to take Spironolactone. 

What are the side effects of Spironolactone?

The most common side effects of Spironolactone include gynecomastia (enlargement of breast tissue in males), diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, and drowsiness. Spironolactone may also cause abnormalities in menstruation, decreased libido, and erectile dysfunction. Contact your healthcare provider if side effects persist or worsen.

Serious adverse effects of Spironolactone include hyperkalemia (high potassium levels in the blood), hypotension (low blood pressure), worsened kidney function or kidney failure, and electrolyte abnormalities. Tell your healthcare professional if you have a history of hyperkalemia or Addison’s disease, or if you are taking a medication called eplerenone.

You should not use Spironolactone if you are allergic to any of its ingredients. Seek emergency medical help if you experience any of the following signs of an allergic reaction: hives, trouble breathing, or swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat. 

In rare cases, Spironolactone can cause a life-threatening skin reaction. Get emergency medical attention right away if you have a fever, sore throat, burning eyes, red or purple rash, or blistering or peeling skin. 

If you have any of the following symptoms, call your doctor right away:

  • Feeling lightheaded or faint

  • Having little or no urination

  • Nausea, weakness, tingling, chest pain, irregular heartbeat (these could signal high potassium levels)

  • Increased thirst or urination, confusion, vomiting, muscle pain, slurred speech, weakness, numbness, and incoordination (these could signal other electrolyte imbalances)

Tell your healthcare provider if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. You should also tell your doctor if you are taking other medications, such as NSAIDs, lithium, digoxin, or cholestyramine, before using Spironolactone.
