What is Aldactone?

Aldactone is a diuretic (water pill) that is used to treat high blood pressure, heart failure, and edema (swelling). Aldactone works by causing your body to make more urine and to lose excess water and salt from your body, while not losing potassium. Aldactone can also be used to diagnose or treat a condition where your body produces too much aldosterone, which is a hormone that regulates salt and water balance in your body.

Do not use Aldactone if you are allergic to any of its ingredients. If you Addison's disease, hyperkalemia, or if you are unable to urinate, do not use Aldactone.

Before taking Aldactone tell your doctor about any medical conditions you may have, including if you have a history of kidney, liver, or heart disease, and if you have an electrolyte imbalance.

Tell your doctor if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or if you are breastfeeding. You also need to tell your healthcare providers about all the medications you are taking including all prescription medications, over-the-counter medications, and vitamins or supplements. If you are taking medications that contain eplerenone, you need to tell your doctor.

Aldactone should only be used as prescribed. Read all prescription guides and follow all the instructions. If you are unsure about your prescription directions you can get medical advice from your pharmacist as well. Aldactone can be taken with or without food, but should be taken consistently (i.e., always with food, or always without food).

Avoid drinking alcohol while using Aldactone as the combination can cause severely low blood pressure.

Keep Aldactone out of the reach and out of sight of children and pets.

What are the side effects of Aldactone?

Common side effects of Aldactone include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, dizziness, headache, muscle cramps, male breast enlargement, and impotence or inability to have an erection.
