Dyrenium is an oral prescription drug that reduces water in the body for patients who have swelling (edema) due to kidney disease, liver disease, heart failure, or cancer. Dyrenium is a diuretic (“water pill”) that flushes the body of water and salt.
The active ingredient in Dyrenium, triamterene, belongs to a class of diuretics called potassium-sparing diuretics. Triamterene works by inhibiting the kidney's ability to reabsorb water and salt (sodium), but it works on a specific part of the kidney so that the kidney can still reabsorb potassium. Potassium is vital to the proper functioning of nerves and the heart.
While medicines may have side effects, many people experience no or minimal side effects. The most common physical side effects of Dyrenium are low blood pressure, dizziness, fatigue, headache, diarrhea, and nausea. Dyrenium may also cause reversible kidney damage.
The most serious side effect of Dyrenium is heart failure due to having too much potassium in the bloodstream. As a diuretic, Dyrenium may cause dehydration. The symptoms of dehydration are dry mouth, thirst, muscle cramps, severe dizziness, and confusion, among others.
Allergic reactions are rare and include skin rash, itching, and swelling. This is not a complete list of side effects that may occur. Ask your doctor or pharmacist about possible side effects before taking this medicine.
