Nexium is a proton pump inhibitor (PPI). It provides heartburn relief by blocking an enzyme in the stomach that produces gastric acid. Stomach acid is normal, but too much of it can cause adverse effects including erosion of the stomach lining, acid reflux, heartburn, erosive esophagitis, and more. Prescription-strength Nexium is prescribed to treat stomach and esophageal conditions such as H. pylori infection and duodenal ulcer disease.
Nexium prescriptions are available in a 30-day supply of 20 mg or 40 mg delayed-release capsules. Nexium is also available in oral packets with strengths of 2.5 mg, 5 mg, 10 mg, 20 mg, or 40 mg. It's usually taken once a day at least one hour before a meal. Antacids may be taken with Nexium for quicker relief. If you're taking Nexium with sucralfate, then take Nexium at least 30 minutes before sucralfate. Always follow your healthcare provider's medical advice when using Nexium.
You may experience headaches or abdominal pain when you begin taking Nexium. Tell your doctor if these side effects don't go away. Other side effects include but are not limited to diarrhea, nausea, flatulence, constipation, and dry mouth. If you experience severe diarrhea, ask your doctor before using an anti-diarrheal medication. The use of Nexium may increase the risk of low magnesium levels, lupus, Clostridium difficile-associated diarrhea, and vitamin B-12 deficiency. Talk to your doctor or pharmacist for more information and a complete list of possible side effects and drug interactions.
Prescription-strength Nexium can be taken daily for up to eight weeks or longer depending on your condition. Over-the-counter Nexium 24HR is not recommended for everyday use on a long-term basis. Tell your doctor if you don't get heartburn relief after 14 days of self-treating with Nexium 24HR tablets. You should not need to use OTC Nexium more than once every four months.
Nexium can be purchased over the counter or with a prescription. If you're experiencing occasional heartburn, then you can try over-the-counter medications to relieve symptoms. Other OTC heartburn relief products similar to Nexium include Prevacid and Prilosec. For mild heartburn, you can also try an antacid like Tums or Alka-Seltzer.
To prevent serious side effects and possible drug interactions, ask a pharmacist for their recommendation based on your symptoms and current list of medications.
