Is there a generic of Dexilant?

Dexilant is a brand-name drug manufactured by Takeda Pharmaceuticals. The generic version of Dexilant, dexlansoprazole, has been approved by the FDA. However, it may not be available for purchase at local pharmacies yet.

What is Dexilant?

Dexilant is used to treat gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), erosive esophagitis (inflammation of the esophagus), and heartburn. It is classified as a proton pump inhibitor (PPI), which works by reducing the amount of acid produced in the stomach. By reducing stomach acid, Dexilant helps promote the healing of the esophageal tissue and reduces acid reflux.

If you have GERD symptoms, such as heartburn, trouble swallowing, or a persistent cough, on a consistent basis, your healthcare provider may prescribe Dexilant. Dexilant is approved for use in adults and children 12 years of age and older.

What strengths of Dexilant are available?

Dexilant delayed-release capsules are available in strengths of 30 mg and 60 mg. A 30-day supply should last you a full month, as Dexilant is typically taken once daily. Dexilant can be taken with or without food. Capsules should be swallowed whole, not chewed.

The dosage of Dexilant can vary depending on the condition being treated. You should seek medical advice from your healthcare provider about information related to your specific condition. Tell your healthcare provider about any medical conditions you have and a list of medications you are currently taking, including herbal, over-the-counter, and prescription drugs.

What are the side effects of Dexilant?

The most common side effects of Dexilant in adults are diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, gas, stomach pain, and common cold symptoms. In children, common side effects of Dexilant include stomach pain, diarrhea, headache, and pain or swelling of the mouth, nose, or throat.

Serious side effects of Dexilant include vitamin B12 deficiency, low blood magnesium levels, growths in the stomach called fundic gland polyps, and severe skin reactions. The use of Dexilant may also increase the risk of Clostridium difficile-associated diarrhea, bone problems, and kidney problems. Seek immediate medical attention if you experience an allergic reaction to Dexilant with symptoms such as rash, itching, trouble breathing, or swelling of the face, mouth, or throat.

This is not a complete list of side effects. Ask your healthcare provider about other possible side effects that may be caused by Dexilant.

When should Dexilant be taken?

Dexilant is usually prescribed to be taken once daily. It can be taken with or without food. However, if your symptoms usually appear after a meal, your healthcare provider may suggest taking Dexilant before eating. Dexilant should be taken regularly for maximum effectiveness. The duration of treatment with Dexilant varies based on the condition being treated.

Swallow the delayed-release capsule whole, or empty its contents onto a spoon with one tablespoon of applesauce and swallow immediately. Do not chew or crush Dexilant capsules. Dexilant may be taken with an over-the-counter antacid for quick relief of heartburn symptoms.

What drug is comparable to Dexilant?

Nexium (esomeprazole), Prilosec (omeprazole), and Protonix (pantoprazole) are PPI drugs that work similarly to Dexilant (dexlansoprazole). A PPI drug may be prescribed to treat erosive esophagitis, GERD, and heartburn. The dosages, side effects, and possible drug interactions of these medications may differ. In addition, PPI drugs can differ in cost.

Antacids and H2 blockers are other types of drugs that may help relieve occasional heartburn symptoms. Consult with your healthcare provider to determine which medication would be best for you.

Is Dexilant as good as Nexium?

Dexilant and Nexium are effective medicines that treat stomach and esophagus problems like GERD, acid reflux, and heartburn. Both are brand-name drugs (Nexium has a generic available), and they belong to the same drug class of PPIs. However, they may differ in possible side effects, uses, and cost. Discuss with a healthcare provider your medical history, allergies, and other medications you’re taking to determine if Dexilant or Nexium is the right medication for your condition.

Which is better: omeprazole or Dexilant?

Prilosec is the brand name for omeprazole, while Dexilant is the brand name for dexlansoprazole. Both Prilosec and Dexilant are PPIs that can treat similar digestive conditions. Prilosec needs to be taken at least one hour before a meal, while Dexilant can be taken without regard to the timing of meals. Prilosec is available in a cheaper, generic alternative, while Dexilant may only be available as an expensive, brand-name drug. Ask your healthcare provider whether omeprazole or Dexilant is the right option for your condition.
