Is there a generic of Zaditor?
Zaditor is a brand-name eye drops medication with the active ingredient, ketotifen. Generic ketotifen eye drops are available under the brand names Equate, Up & Up, and others.
What is Zaditor?
Zaditor is a brand-name over-the-counter eye drops medication that treats the eye discomfort, swelling, and itchiness caused by conjunctivitis, a bacterial infection of the linings of the whites of the eye or inner eyelid. The active ingredient in Zaditor, ketotifen fumarate, belongs to a class of drugs called antihistamines. A bacterial infection provokes nearby cells in the body to release histamines as a defense. These substances cause the swelling, itchiness, and discomfort on the surface of the eye. Antihistamines block the actions of histamines and so relieve the symptoms of allergic reactions.
One to two drops of Zaditor should be placed on the affected eye every 8 to 12 hours.
What are the side effects of Zaditor?
Common side effects of Zaditor often include temporary site reactions, such as burning, redness, or stinging, but these should pass after a few minutes. Other side effects include dry eye, stuffy nose, increased light sensitivity, and a bad taste in the mouth.
Allergic reactions are rare and include hives, facial swelling, and eye irritation that continue for longer than a few minutes. This is not a complete list of side effects that may occur. Consult with your physician about any concerns you may have with side effects.
