What is Azopt?

Azopt is an FDA-approved prescription medication used to treat high pressure in the eyes (intraocular pressure). This pressure is usually caused by open angle-type glaucoma or other eye conditions, such as ocular hypertension. Brinzolamide is the active ingredient in Azopt. It works by decreasing the amount of fluid in the eye, which relieves pressure and prevents blindness. This medication belongs to a group of drugs known as carbonic anhydrase inhibitors.

Azopt comes in the form of a 1% ophthalmic suspension that is applied three times per day, as advised by your doctor. Wash your hands before applying these drops to avoid contamination, and do not allow the tip of the dropper to touch the surface of your eye or other surrounding surfaces.

Inform your doctor about all other medications you are currently using before you start taking Azopt. If you are using other eye medications, you may need to wait at least 10 minutes between the application of new drops. This medication should be used regularly for maximum benefits. Continue using Azopt even if you feel well. Patients with glaucoma or high pressure in the eye usually do not feel sick and therefore may not be aware of their need for treatment.

What are the side effects of Azopt?

The most common side effects associated with using Azopt include temporary blurred vision and a bitter or sour taste in the mouth. Other side effects may include headache, eye discharge or discomfort, redness, itching, and runny nose. If any of these side effects worsen or persist, you should contact your pharmacist or doctor immediately.

Serious side effects are rare. However, you should seek immediate medical attention if you experience any signs of an allergic reaction, such as severe itching, swelling, or trouble breathing. Consult your healthcare provider for medical advice if you are undergoing ocular surgery or develop an eye infection while using Azopt.

Contact lenses should be removed before instilling Azopt into the eyes. Azopt may contain a preservative called benzalkonium chloride that can be absorbed in soft contact lenses. Contact lenses may be reinserted 15 minutes after using Azopt.

This is not a complete list of possible side effects. Check with your healthcare provider for other side effects and precautions to take while using Azopt.
