Ibrance is a brand-name prescription drug that is not available in a generic version.
Ibrance is a brand-name prescription drug used to treat breast cancer that has spread to other parts of the body (metastatic breast cancer or MBC). Its active ingredient, palbociclib, stops cancer cells from growing by blocking an enzyme crucial to cell growth. It is taken in tablet or capsule form.
Ibrance is used in combination with a hormone drug such as anastrozole, exemestane, or letrozole in post-menopausal women or in men, or the drug fulvestrant with disease progression after hormonal treatment.
The most common serious side effect of Ibrance, lowered white blood cell counts, is experienced by almost all patients. White blood cells are the body's principal defense against infections, so Ibrance lowers the body's ability to prevent or fight infections. As a result, Ibrance patients are at high risk of infections, which could be serious or fatal. Pneumonia and respiratory infections are the most common. Consult your doctor immediately if you have an infection or symptoms of an infection such as fever, chills, chest pain, shortness of breath, or cough.
Swelling of the lungs is another serious side effect causing shortness of breath, blood clots in the lungs, and even death.
Other common side effects include, but are not limited to, easy bruising/bleeding, weakness/tiredness, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, appetite loss, mouth sores, dry skin, rash, altered taste, nosebleed, and hair loss.
This is not a full list of side effects and others may occur. Consult your healthcare provider for a full list of side effects.
Before taking Ibrance, tell your doctor about all the medications you take, including prescription and OTC drugs, vitamins, and supplements.
Some drugs and substances may cause increased levels of Ibrance, which can cause more Ibrance side effects. A lower dose of Ibrance may be required if the combination cannot be avoided. Examples include:
Biaxin (clarithromycin)
Grapefruit and grapefruit juice
Nizoral (ketoconazole)
Ritonavir or drugs that contain ritonavir
Sporanox (itraconazole)
Vfend (voriconazole)
Some drugs decrease levels of Ibrance, making Ibrance less effective. Examples include:
Dilantin (phenytoin)
Rifampin
St. John’s Wort
Tegretol (carbamazepine)
Another type of drug interaction is where Ibrance can affect other drugs, causing the other drugs’ levels to increase. The other medicine may require a lower dose if the combination cannot be avoided. Examples include:
Cyclosporine
Duragesic (fentanyl)
Pimozide
Prograf (tacrolimus)
Quinidine
Rapamune (sirolimus)
This is not a full list of drug interactions and others may occur. Consult your healthcare provider for more information and questions about drug interactions with Ibrance.
