Is there a generic of Sprycel?
Sprycel is a brand-name prescription drug with the active ingredient, dasatinib. Generic dasatinib is not available in the United States at this time.
What is Sprycel?
Sprycel is a brand-name prescription drug that treats chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) that is Philadelphia chromosome-positive. CML is a cancer of the bone marrow that causes an overproduction of white blood cells. Sprycel is prescribed as a first-line therapy after initial diagnosis, and it can treat other stages of CML when treatment with imatinib has not been successful. Sprycel can also be used as a chemotherapy to treat Philadelphia chromosome-positive acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL).
Leukemia is caused when cells in the bone marrow mutate and overproduce defective white blood cells. The active ingredient in Sprycel, dasatinib, blocks the ability of a certain protein to signal the production of white blood cells. Sprycel is taken as a tablet once daily. The dosage will vary depending on the cancer being treated. Sprycel can be taken with or without food. Tablets should not be crushed, cut, or chewed.
What are the side effects of Sprycel?
Common side effects of Sprycel include, but are not limited to, nausea, vomiting, tiredness, headache, rash, muscle pain, chest pain, and shortness of breath. Sprycel can also cause upset stomach, mouth sores, fever, loss of appetite, diarrhea, and low blood pressure. This is not a complete list of side effects. Talk to a healthcare provider if side effects develop, persist, or worsen.
Sprycel kills off cancer cells very quickly, which may fill the bloodstream with the contents of those dead cancer cells. This may cause tumor lysis syndrome, a health-threatening condition in which the cancer cell contents poison the body, leading to kidney failure and an abnormal heartbeat. Other serious side effects of Sprycel include low blood cell counts, bleeding problems, fluid retention, heart problems, high blood pressure in the lungs, severe skin reactions, and slowed growth (in children).
Allergic reactions are rare. Signs and symptoms of an allergic reaction include fever, sore throat, swelling, itching, or rash. Seek immediate medical attention if you suspect an allergic reaction.
Talk to a healthcare provider or health care professional for medical advice about other possible side effects, drug interactions, warnings, and precautions.
