What is Sutent?
Sutent is a brand-name prescription drug used to treat renal cell carcinoma, gastrointestinal stromal tumors, and advanced pancreatic neuroendocrine tumors that cannot be operated on.
Renal cell carcinoma (RCC) is a cancer that starts in the tiny tubes in the kidney but then spreads to the rest of the kidney. Sutent is primarily prescribed to patients with advanced-stage RCC or, in combination with other drugs, to treat renal cell carcinoma after surgery. Advanced stage (or stage 4) renal cell carcinoma is when the cancer has spread to other places in the body.
Gastrointestinal stromal tumors are “soft tissue” cancers of the gastrointestinal system that can appear anywhere from the throat to the rectum, but occur most commonly in the stomach and small intestine. They are cancers that start in the nerve cells that line the digestive system walls.
Pancreatic neuroendocrine tumors are a rare and slow-growing form of pancreatic cancer that begins in the hormone-producing cells of the pancreas.
Sunitinib, the active ingredient in Sutent is called a “multi-targeted receptor tyrosine kinase inhibitor,” which means it blocks proteins (tyrosine kinases) from attaching to other proteins (receptors) which signal the cell to produce new cells. These proteins become overactive in cancer cells, and this overactivity causes tumors to grow uncontrollably. Sunitinib works by preventing tyrosine kinases from attaching to receptors and “signaling” cancer cells to divide. This stops the growth of cancer cells.
Sutent is taken as a tablet once daily without food. For renal cell carcinoma and gastrointestinal stromal tumors, Sutent is taken in cycles with weeks off. Sutent is taken continually for advanced pancreatic neuroendocrine tumors.
What are the side effects of Sutent?
Common side effects of Sutent include, but are not limited to, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, upset stomach, constipation, cough, hair loss, fatigue, feeling tired, weakness, cough, loss of appetite, shortness of breath, chest pain, bruising, bleeding, and blisters. Sutent also causes a common reaction called hand-foot skin reaction, a condition involving stinging, tingling, pain, dry skin, cracked skin, thickened skin, swelling, and blistering on the palms of the hand and soles of the feet.
Severe side effects include high blood pressure, low blood sugar, bleeding problems, and liver problems. Sutent also causes tumor lysis syndrome, a condition caused by dead cancer cell contents accumulating in the body. These cell contents are toxic and lead to kidney problems and possible kidney failure. Symptoms are high blood potassium, low blood calcium, heart problems, and seizures.
Allergic reactions are rare. Watch for important signs of an allergic reaction, such as fever, sore throat, swelling, itching, or rash, and talk to your doctor if you suspect an allergic reaction
