Hydrochlorothiazide is a thiazide diuretic. It works by reducing the kidney's ability to reabsorb water or salt from the urine. Thiazide diuretics often the first type of diuretic prescribed to treat edema or high blood pressure.
Triamterene belongs to a class of diuretics called potassium-sparing diuretics. Triamterene also blocks the kidney's ability to reabsorb water and salt (sodium), but it works on a specific part of the kidney so that the kidney can still reabsorb potassium back into the bloodstream. This prevents potassium deficiency, a potentially health-threatening condition. Potassium is vital to the proper functioning of nerves and the heart.
The most common physical side effects of hydrochlorothiazide are weakness, low blood pressure, nausea, stomach pain, constipation, and impotence. The most serious physical side effect is low blood potassium. Triamterene-Hctz also includes triamterene to help prevent low blood potassium. Allergic reactions can be severe and include rash and anaphylactic shock, a condition where blood pressure drops to dangerously low levels.
The most common physical side effects of triamterene are low blood pressure, dizziness, fatigue, headache, diarrhea, and nausea. Triamterene may also cause kidney damage. The most serious side effect of triamterene is heart failure due to having too much potassium in the bloodstream. Allergic reactions to triamterene are rare and include skin rash, itching, and swelling.
As diuretics, both triamterene and hydrochlorothiazide may cause dehydration. The symptoms of dehydration are dry mouth, thirst, muscle cramps, severe dizziness, and confusion, among others.
