What is Votrient?
Votrient is a brand-name prescription drug used to treat renal cell carcinoma and, after initial chemotherapy treatment, soft tissue carcinoma. Renal cell carcinoma is a cancer of the tiny tubes in the kidney. Soft tissue carcinoma is a cancer that starts in the “soft” tissues, such as fat tissues, muscle, tendons, ligaments, and blood vessels.
The active ingredient in Votrient, pazopanib, is a “tyrosine kinase inhibitor.” It works by preventing a subclass of protein enzymes, tyrosine kinases, from “turning on” chemical processes that drive cells to replicate themselves. In certain cancers, this protein becomes overactive and helps drive the growth of cancer cells. Blocking this protein stops the growth of cancer cells and eventually kills them.
Votrient is taken as a tablet once daily.
