Is nebivolol the same as Bystolic?

Bystolic is a brand-name medication used for the treatment of high blood pressure. There is now a generic version available called nebivolol. Generics can save you money compared to brand-name drugs. Nebivolol and Bystolic are the same. You can use a SingleCare coupon on either the generic nebivolol or brand-name Bystolic.

What is Bystolic?

Bystolic is a beta blocker medication that blocks substances like adrenaline from reaching the heart. This slows down heart rate, lowers blood pressure, and decreases strain on the heart. Lowering blood pressure helps reduce the risk of heart attacks, stroke, and kidney problems.

Getting control of blood pressure is part of a cardiovascular (heart) risk management program, including, as appropriate, control of high cholesterol and/or diabetes, prevention of blood clots, exercise, and diet (reduced salt intake). Smoking and alcohol should also be avoided.

What doses of Bystolic are available?

Bystolic tablets are available in the following strengths: 2.5 mg tablets, 5 mg tablets, 10 mg tablets, and 20 mg tablets. You may need to monitor your blood pressure while taking Bystolic. Inform your doctor if your blood pressure is high or low. He or she may need to adjust your dose.

Bystolic is usually taken once per day either with or without food—your doctor may have a preference depending on your medical condition. You should take Bystolic every day for it to be most effective. Beta blockers like Bystolic should never be stopped abruptly, as this can lead to or worsen chest pain, irregular heartbeat, and in some cases, heart attack. It may take a few weeks before you get the full benefits of Bystolic. Follow your doctor's medical advice for dosage and use of this medication.

Many patients ask what to do in the event of a missed dose. If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for the next dose, though, skip the missed dose and take the next dose on the regular schedule. Do not take two doses to try to make up for a missed dose. Ask your healthcare provider if you have any questions. Be sure to store Bystolic at room temperature, away from light, heat, and moisture. Keep out of the reach and out of sight of children and pets.

What are the side effects of Bystolic?

Before taking Bystolic, read the information leaflet that comes with your prescription to find out about common side effects, warnings, and other information. Possible side effects of Bystolic include, but are not limited to:

  • Headache, dizziness, or lightheadedness

  • Fatigue or difficulty sleeping

  • Nausea or diarrhea

  • Slow heart rate

  • Cold hands or feet from a decrease in blood flow

Fainting, blue fingers or toes, chest pain, and worsening symptoms of heart problems are serious side effects that require immediate medical attention.

An allergic reaction is also possible. Symptoms of an allergy include itching, swelling, a rash, and trouble breathing. These symptoms require emergency medical attention.

Before taking Bystolic, let your doctor know if you have any health problems, including a medical history of heart failure; circulatory system problems; breathing problems; diabetes; or kidney, liver, or thyroid disease.

Can you take Bystolic during pregnancy or while breastfeeding?

Women who are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or who are breastfeeding, should consult their healthcare provider for additional information and medical advice before taking Bystolic. There is not enough data on Bystolic and pregnant women. Using a beta blocker in the third trimester of pregnancy can increase the risk of problems in the newborn baby such as hypotension (low blood pressure), bradycardia (slow heart rate), hypoglycemia (low blood sugar), and respiratory depression (slow breathing, not getting enough oxygen). Bystolic is not recommended for use in breastfeeding women, because serious side effects can occur in the baby, such as a slow heart rate.

Can Bystolic cause weight gain?

Some beta blockers are known to cause weight gain. One study, published in the Journal of Cardiovascular Pharmacology in September 2010, found that Bystolic may cause weight loss. Consult your healthcare provider for more information about beta blockers and weight changes.

If you have heart failure and you have swelling or weight gain while taking Bystolic, tell your doctor immediately. This could be a warning sign that your heart condition is worsening.

What happens if you suddenly stop taking Bystolic?

Do not stop taking Bystolic abruptly. If your doctor wants to change your blood pressure medication, he or she will probably want you to gradually decrease your dose of Bystolic first. If your side effects persist or worsen and you believe you are not responding well to Bystolic, let your doctor know before you stop taking this medication.

Is Bystolic prescribed for anxiety?

Some beta blocker medications may occasionally be prescribed for anxiety, as they decrease heart rate. They've been shown to reduce anxiety in some individuals who take beta blockers as needed rather than regularly. However, there have been some reports of beta blockers actually worsening anxiety. Tell your healthcare provider if you are experiencing anxiety and he or she will be able to prescribe the best treatment for your medical condition. The Bystolic dosage for anxiety ranges from 5 mg to 40 mg per day. Ask your healthcare provider about how much Bystolic to take for anxiety symptoms.

Is there a cheaper alternative to Bystolic?

If your cost for Bystolic is too high, you can ask your healthcare provider about other beta blockers, such as Inderal (propranolol), Lopressor (metoprolol tartrate), Tenormin (atenolol), or Toprol XL (metoprolol succinate extended-release).
