Lotensin is a brand-name blood pressure drug. There are dozens of generic benazepril alternatives available from manufacturers such as Teva, Huawei, Mylan, and others.
Lotensin is a brand-name prescription drug that lowers high blood pressure or hypertension. Benazepril, the active ingredient in Lotensin, belongs to a class of medications called ACE inhibitors. These drugs block the action of a protein, called angiotensin, which causes blood vessels to contract and get more narrow. Blocked by the ACE inhibitor, the blood vessels relax and get wider. As a result, blood pressure goes down. Because of the increased blood flow, Lotensin reduces the load on the heart, as well.
ACE inhibitors are among the safest blood pressure drugs, but not necessarily the most effective. Benazepril is one of the safest of the ACE inhibitors. As a result, Lotensin or generic benazepril will often be the first drug prescribed to a patient newly diagnosed with hypertension.
Lotensin is also prescribed to reduce blood pressure in patients with kidney disease or who have had a heart attack.
While medicines may have side effects, many people experience no side effects, or the side effects they experience are very minimal.
The most common physical side effects of Lotensin include headache, dizziness, nausea, chest pain, impotence, and fatigue. The most serious side effect of Lotensin is high potassium levels in the blood, so patients taking Lotensin are advised not to take potassium supplements. High blood potassium can cause the heart to beat irregularly or even cause a heart attack.
Allergic reactions are rare and include swelling, rash, and itching. The most serious allergic reaction to Lotensin is a rapid swelling beneath the skin that, if severe enough, can restrict the airways.
