Leflunomide is an FDA-approved disease-modifying anti-rheumatic drug (DMARD) and is used to treat the symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis. This is an autoimmune condition where the immune system fails to recognize the body as itself and attacks the healthy tissues around the joints. This condition causes symptoms such as tender, warm, swollen joints, joint stiffness that is usually worse in the mornings and after inactivity, fatigue, fever, and loss of appetite.
Leflunomide is part of the antirheumatics selective immunosuppressants drug class and works by regulating the immune system and reduces swelling and inflammation in the body.
To determine whether this drug is safe for you, tell your healthcare provider if you have a history of liver disease or hepatitis, a serious or uncontrolled infection, kidney disease, nerve problems, such as neuropathy caused by diabetes, a history of tuberculosis, a weak immune system or bone marrow disorder, or if you are using any drugs that weaken your immune system (such as cancer medicine or steroids).
Because Leflunomide affects your immune system, you should not use this drug if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant. While taking Leflunomide make sure you use an effective birth control method to avoid pregnancy.
Leflunomide primarily affects your immune system to help treat symptoms so side effects of this drug may include a general feeling of weakness, rashes, mouth ulcers, nausea, diarrhea, stomach pain, headache, abnormal liver function tests, thinning hair, back pain, rash, or high blood pressure.
If you experience signs such as sore throat or fever, any unexplained bruising or bleeding, breathlessness, jaundice, when the eyes and skin turn yellow then you should seek medical attention as soon as possible as these may be signs of an infection.
Leflunomide can cause severe or fatal liver damage. While taking Leflunomide your liver function will need to be tested often, and you may need to stop taking Leflunomide based on the results of these tests.
