Altace is a brand-name blood pressure medication. Generic alternatives (ramipril) are supplied by Apotex, Lupin, Chartwell, Aurobindo, Teva, Zydus, Watson, and several other generic prescription drug manufacturers.
Altace is a prescription drug that lowers blood pressure in patients diagnosed with high blood pressure (hypertension). The active ingredient in Altace, ramipril, belongs to a class of medications called ACE inhibitors, which lower blood pressure by blocking the action of a protein (angiotensin) that causes the blood vessels to tighten. As the blood vessels lose tension, they get wider, and blood pressure within them goes down.
While medicines may have side effects, many people have no, or minor, side effects. The most common physical side effects include headache, dizziness, chest pain, nausea, diarrhea, and fatigue. Allergic reactions are rare and include swelling and hives. The most serious allergic reaction to Altace is a rapid swelling beneath the skin that, if severe enough, can restrict the airways. This is not a complete list of all side effects that may occur. If you have questions or concerns about side effects, ask your healthcare provider.
