What is Edecrin?

Edecrin is an oral prescription drug that reduces water in the body in patients who have edema (swelling) due to heart failure, kidney failure, or liver failure. The active ingredient in Edecrin, ethacrynic acid, is a strong diuretic (“water pill”) that flushes the body of water and salt. 

Ethacrynic acid belongs to a class of diuretics called loop diuretics. Ethacrynic acid works by inhibiting the kidney's ability to reabsorb salt in a particular place in the kidneys. Loop diuretics are the strongest and fastest-acting diuretics.

Although Edecrin is usually taken as a tablet, it is available as an injection, as well.

What are the side effects of Edecrin?
