Edecrin is an oral prescription drug that reduces water in the body in patients who have edema (swelling) due to heart failure, kidney failure, or liver failure. The active ingredient in Edecrin, ethacrynic acid, is a strong diuretic (“water pill”) that flushes the body of water and salt.
Ethacrynic acid belongs to a class of diuretics called loop diuretics. Ethacrynic acid works by inhibiting the kidney's ability to reabsorb salt in a particular place in the kidneys. Loop diuretics are the strongest and fastest-acting diuretics.
Although Edecrin is usually taken as a tablet, it is available as an injection, as well.
Do not take Edecrin if you are unable to urinate, or if you have recently had watery and severe diarrhea. Before taking Edecrin, tell your doctor about all of your medical conditions and all of the medications you take, including prescription and OTC drugs, vitamins, and supplements.
The most common physical side effects of Edecrin are electrolyte abnormalities, headache, nausea, diarrhea, stomach pain, loss of appetite, weakness, vertigo (feeling off balance), and trouble swallowing. Serious side effects may occur, such as low potassium levels in the blood. Edecrin also prevents potassium from being reabsorbed into the bloodstream, so potassium levels can quickly drop. Low potassium can result in irregular heartbeat, confusion, inability to move correctly, muscle paralysis, and even death.
As a powerful diuretic, Edecrin may cause severe dehydration. The symptoms of dehydration are dry mouth, thirst, muscle cramps, severe dizziness, and confusion, among others. Your doctor will tell you how much fluid to drink while taking Edecrin.
This is not a complete list of side effects that may occur. Ask your doctor or pharmacist about possible side effects before taking this medicine.
