Lasix is a brand-name drug that is manufactured by Validus Pharmaceuticals LLC. Furosemide is the FDA-approved generic version of Lasix. There are several manufacturers of generic furosemide including Mylan and Sandoz.
Lasix is used to reduce edema, or fluid retention, that can occur with certain conditions, such as heart failure, kidney disease, and liver failure. Symptoms of edema include swelling in the arms, legs, and abdomen, Lasix also treats high blood pressure.
Lasix prevents the absorption of excess sodium, chloride, and water in the body. As a loop diuretic or water pill, Lasix causes an increase in urine output. Lasix is available as an oral tablet, oral solution, and injection. Lasix tablets are taken by mouth on an empty stomach, usually once or twice a day. It is not recommended to take this medication within four hours of your bedtime to prevent the need to urinate in the middle of the night. The injection form of Lasix is given to patients with severe medical conditions when Lasix cannot be taken by mouth.
Your Lasix dosage is determined based on your medical condition. Inform your healthcare professional of any medical conditions such as kidney disease, enlarged prostate, urination problems, cirrhosis or other liver disease, an electrolyte imbalance, high cholesterol, gout, lupus or diabetes. Do not use Lasix if you are allergic to furosemide or sulfa drugs. Use Lasix only as directed by your doctor or healthcare provider and request additional medical advice.
