Horizant is a brand-name prescription drug and there is no generic alternative currently available.
The FDA-approved prescription medication, Horizant, is used to treat severe restless leg syndrome and also to relieve nerve pain associated with shingles (known as postherpetic neuralgia).
The active ingredient in Horizant is gabapentin enacarbil. This medication belongs to a class of drugs known as anticonvulsants or anti-seizure drugs. They work by affecting chemicals and nerves in the body that are responsible for causing some types of pain.
This medication comes in the form of an oral tablet and should only be taken as directed by your doctor. Ensure that you take this medication regularly in order to gain the most benefit from it.
Tell your doctor if you have ever had kidney disease, diabetes, depression, liver disease, heart disease, or a seizure before using this medication. Your doctor will have to study the possible complications and advise if this medication is right for you.
The use of Horizant may lead to some unwanted side effects. These may include but aren't limited to drowsiness, dizziness, fatigue, peripheral edema, blurred vision, and a loss of coordination. A small number of patients using this medication may experience depression and suicidal thoughts. Tell your doctor immediately if you or your family notice any unusual or sudden changes in mood, thoughts, or behavior including signs of depression and thoughts of harming oneself.
Do not use Horizant if you are allergic to gabapentin. Allergic reactions to this medication are rare, however, you should seek immediate medication attention if you notice any signs of a serious allergic reaction such as a rash, itching or swelling, fever or trouble breathing.
