Trintellix is a brand-name drug. Trintellix was formerly known as Brintellix. However, the FDA approved its name change to avoid confusion with Brilinta, which is a blood thinner. The generic version of Trintellix is vortioxetine and is not yet available.
Trintellix is an antidepressant approved to treat major depressive disorder (MDD). It works by balancing serotonin levels in the brain, which may help improve mood, appetite, sleep health, and energy levels in people with depression. Vortioxetine is the active ingredient in Trintellix. Because it works differently from other antidepressants, vortioxetine is considered a miscellaneous or atypical antidepressant. It may also be classified as a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) and serotonin modulator. Trintellix is usually reserved to treat depression that isn’t improved with other antidepressants.
Trintellix is available as an oral tablet in strengths of 5 mg, 10 mg, and 20 mg. Trintellix is taken by mouth, usually once daily with or without food. Your healthcare provider may start you at a low dose and gradually increase the dose, depending on your response to treatment. If you experience side effects from Trintellix, your healthcare provider may adjust your dosage. Suddenly stopping this antidepressant could cause rebound depression or withdrawal symptoms.
Always follow your healthcare provider's medical advice and read the medication guide for more information about taking Trintellix.
Common side effects of Trintellix include nausea, vomiting, and constipation. Other side effects may include dizziness, gas, dry mouth, abnormal dreams, loss of libido, and sexual dysfunction. Tell a healthcare provider if these side effects persist or worsen.
A possible serious side effect of Trintellix is serotonin syndrome. Symptoms of serotonin syndrome include fast heart rate, blood pressure changes, dizziness, agitation, confusion, and coma. Seek medical attention right away if you experience these side effects. Other serious side effects include an increased risk of bleeding, manic episodes, eye problems, and low blood sodium levels (hyponatremia)
To avoid a drug interaction and decrease the likelihood of serious side effects, tell your healthcare provider about all the medications you take. Taking certain drugs with Trintellix may increase the risk of adverse effects.
Antidepressants, such as Trintellix, may increase the risk of suicidal thoughts and behavior in some people. Notify your healthcare provider if you suspect your condition is worsening rather than improving while taking Trintellix.
This is not a complete list of side effects.
Clinical studies have shown that it can take around two weeks for Trintellix to start improving symptoms of depression. However, the maximum effects of Trintellix may not be seen until four weeks after starting treatment. In some cases, it can take up to eight weeks or longer to experience the full benefits of Trintellix.
Trintellix is not FDA approved to treat anxiety. Still, some healthcare providers may prescribe Trintellix off-label for anxiety disorders. Clinical studies have shown that Trintellix may improve symptoms of anxiety.
Trintellix (or vortioxetine) is a unique antidepressant in that it is a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) and a serotonin receptor modulator. It works by increasing serotonin levels and activating certain serotonin receptors in the brain. Serotonin is a neurotransmitter that contributes to mental well-being and mood, among other functions.
Trintellix is a unique drug in that there is no other drug that works exactly like Trintellix. However, other antidepressants have similar effects on serotonin. Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) help increase serotonin levels and include drugs like Prozac (fluoxetine), Zoloft (sertraline), and Lexapro (escitalopram).
Other atypical antidepressants that may be prescribed instead of Trintellix include Wellbutrin (bupropion), Viibryd (vilazodone), and Remeron (mirtazapine). Consult with a healthcare provider to determine the most appropriate treatment option for you.
