Trazodone Hcl is an FDA-approved prescription medication used to treat major depressive disorder. It is approved to be taken daily to help improve symptoms of depression. However, Trazodone Hcl can also be used off-label to improve insomnia and anxiety related to depression. Trazodone Hcl belongs to a class of drugs called serotonin antagonist and reuptake inhibitors (SARIs).
Trazodone Hcl is available in the form of an oral tablet that is usually used once or twice daily after a meal or snack. A healthcare provider will recommend an appropriate dosage based on an assessment of your current medical condition, other drugs you are currently taking, and your response to treatment. For example, if you experience drowsiness and you are taking one dose daily, a healthcare provider may recommend taking your dose at bedtime.
Use this medication exactly as prescribed by your healthcare provider. Do not increase your dosage or use this drug more frequently than recommended. Taking trazodone without guidance from a healthcare provider could increase the risk of side effects.
Continue using this medication even if you feel well. Try taking it at the same time every day to help yourself remember. Do not stop using this medication without consulting your doctor. Withdrawal symptoms, such as agitation, anxiety, and trouble sleeping, can occur if the drug is suddenly stopped.
The most common side effects of trazodone include:
Dizziness
Sleepiness
Tiredness
Diarrhea
Blurred vision
Swelling of the arms or legs
Stuffy nose
Weight loss
Other side effects may include constipation, dry mouth, fatigue, headache, tremors, aches or pains, and weight gain. Consult your doctor or pharmacist if you experience any side effects that persist or worsen. Compared to other antidepressants, such as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), trazodone causes fewer sexual side effects. Some people may experience increased sex drive (libido) while taking trazodone.
Trazodone Hcl may increase serotonin levels and increase the risk of a serious condition known as serotonin syndrome. The risk of serotonin syndrome is amplified if you are taking other drugs that increase serotonin levels with Trazodone Hcl. Seek immediate medical attention if you develop symptoms such as a fast heartbeat, hallucinations, loss of coordination, severe dizziness, severe nausea and vomiting, twitching muscles, unexplained fever, and unusual restlessness.
Other serious side effects that are possible while taking Trazodone Hcl include suicidal thoughts or behaviors, heart rhythm problems (arrhythmias), low blood pressure when moving from a lying or sitting position to a standing position (orthostatic hypotension), an increased risk of bleeding, a painful or prolonged erection (priapism), mania or hypomania, angle-closure glaucoma, and low blood sodium levels (hyponatremia).
Serious allergic reactions to this medication are rare. However, you should seek immediate medical attention if you experience symptoms of a serious allergic reaction, such as itching, rash, swelling of the face or throat, severe dizziness, chest tightness, or trouble breathing.
Consult your doctor or healthcare provider for medical advice on the risks and benefits of using Trazodone Hcl as this is not a complete list of side effects.
Trazodone is often prescribed off-label to treat short-term insomnia. In other words, trazodone has not been approved by the FDA to treat insomnia. However, studies suggest that trazodone is a useful sleep aid, especially for people who experience insomnia with depression. Trazodone may decrease the time it takes to fall asleep and help you stay asleep longer. Trazodone is usually taken 30 minutes before bed as a sleep aid, and it should only be taken around eight to nine hours before needing to wake up.
