Trulicity is the brand name of the diabetes medication dulaglutide. Lilly's patent for Trulicity was approved by the FDA in September 2014. A generic version of Trulicity (dulaglutide) is not currently available. In the meantime, you can still save money on this brand-name prescription drug by using SingleCare's drug coupons and pricing tool. You can use our free coupon card to reduce the cost of this drug by up to 80% when you purchase this medication at a participating local pharmacy.
Trulicity is a Type 2 diabetes medication. The active ingredient in Trulicity is called dulaglutide. It works, along with diet and exercise, by regulating blood sugar and therefore, it also helps prevent complications such as kidney damage, vision problems, nerve damage, loss of limbs, and sexual dysfunction. Maintaining control of your diabetes can also decrease your risk for heart attack and stroke.
Although Trulicity can get blood sugar levels under control, it is not insulin or a substitute for insulin. If you need insulin treatment, Trulicity may be prescribed along with other diabetes medication.
Trulicity is an injectable medication. It's available in strengths of 0.75mg/0.5mL, 1.5mg/0.5mL, 3mg/0.5mL, and 4.5mg/0.5mL. The recommended starting weekly dosage of Trulicity is usually 0.75mg/0.5mL injected once weekly. Follow your physician's instructions for using this prefilled pen. Always rotate (change) your injection site. Do not inject Trulicity in the same place two weeks in a row.
Before injecting Trulicity, inspect the solution. Do not use Trulicity if you find particles or discoloration inside the pen. Clean the injection site (you can use the thigh, abdomen, or upper arm). If you use insulin, you may inject both insulin and Trulicity into the same area of the body but not too close to the first injection site.
Your dosage is based on your medical condition and response to treatment. Your doctor may gradually increase your dose if needed for better glucose control. Your doctor will likely provide medical advice on a new diet and exercise regimen to try with Trulicity to reap the most reward from the treatment of Type 2 diabetes.
Trulicity may affect digestion. Common side effects of Trulicity include:
Nausea
Diarrhea
Vomiting
Abdominal pain
Upset stomach
Suppressed appetite
Fatigue
Trulicity is not recommended for use in individuals with severe stomach or intestinal issues.
Kidney problems are more serious side effects of Trulicity. Tell your doctor immediately if you have to urinate less frequently or if the amount of urine changes.
Hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) is more likely to happen if you take Trulicity with insulin or certain other diabetes drugs. Talk to your health care provider about monitoring blood sugar and what to do if you have low blood sugar. You should wear a medical alert at all times that lets first responders know you have Type 2 diabetes in the event of an emergency.
An allergic reaction is rare but possible. Go to the hospital for emergency medical help if Trulicity causes signs of a serious allergic reaction such as a rash, itching, swelling, severe dizziness, or difficulty breathing.
Before taking Trulicity, tell your doctor about any medical conditions, especially if you have a personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma or Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia syndrome Type 2. This medication has caused thyroid cancer in rats, but its effect on the human thyroid is unknown. Consult a health care provider if you notice any unusual lumps in your neck, if you have trouble swallowing or breathing, or if you have persistent hoarseness.
Ask your pharmacist for more information about possible side effects.
Before you take Trulicity, tell your doctor about all of the medications you take, including prescription medications, OTC drugs, vitamins, and supplements, so your doctor can check for drug interactions.
Because Trulicity affects gastric emptying, it can affect how oral medicines are absorbed. This may have more of an effect on drugs with a narrow therapeutic index, like the blood thinner Coumadin (warfarin). A narrow therapeutic index means that there is a small difference in a drug being therapeutic or being potentially toxic. Ask your healthcare provider if you need to space the timing of your medications when you take Trulicity.
Insulin or certain diabetes medicines, such as Amaryl (glimepiride), glipizide, or glyburide, can cause low blood sugar when combined with Trulicity. If you take one of these drugs, your healthcare provider may lower the dose and will monitor you carefully.
Trulicity slows digestion which may make you feel more full. Trulicity is not FDA-approved as a weight-loss drug. It is, however, often prescribed off-label for weight loss in conjunction with a recommended diet and exercise plan. Together, diet, exercise, and Trulicity could help you lose weight. Patients who take higher doses of Trulicity may lose more weight, but could also experience more side effects and low blood sugar.
Trulicity may be taken any time of the day on the day of the week that you take Trulicity. You should wait at least three days between doses if you need to change your weekly injection day. Your healthcare provider may also recommend a certain time of day to take Trulicity with or without food.
Store the Trulicity pen in the original carton in the refrigerator, away from direct heat and light. Do not freeze. If the pen has been frozen, discard the pen and call your pharmacist. You can also store your Trulicity pen at room temperature for up to 14 days. You can always ask your pharmacist if you have questions about Trulicity storage.
Trulicity (dulaglutide), Bydureon (exenatide), Victoza (liraglutide), Januvia (sitagliptin), Glucophage (metformin), or others, are diabetes medications that your doctor may consider prescribing you. Rybelsus (semaglutide) is an oral diabetes medication that is similar to Trulicity but is available in oral form rather than injection. There are also various combination drugs that contain two or three types of diabetes medications in one pill. Your doctor is the best person to determine which one is the best treatment for your medical condition.
Note: If you have Type 1 diabetes or diabetic ketoacidosis, you'll need a different treatment plan.
Victoza and Trulicity are similar, as they are injectable diabetes medications that belong to a newer class of non-insulin diabetes drugs that increase the amount of insulin that the pancreas produces in reaction to high blood sugar. One difference between Victoza and Trulicity is that Victoza should be injected once a day instead of once a week, like Trulicity. A healthcare professional will determine which is better for you: Trulicity or Victoza.
Like Victoza, Ozempic is similar to Trulicity. Ozempic contains the ingredient semaglutide, and is injected once weekly.
