Zepbound is a once-weekly injectable prescription medication made by Eli Lilly and Company. It is classified as a glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide (GIP) receptor and glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonist and is FDA-approved for chronic weight management in adults with a body mass index of:
30 kg/m^2 or more (obesity); or
27 kg/m^2 or more (overweight) with at least one weight-related risk factor such as high cholesterol, high blood pressure, sleep apnea, heart disease, or Type 2 diabetes
Zepbound is not approved for use in people with Type 1 diabetes.
Zepbound has a black box warning, the most serious warning required by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Zepbound was shown to cause thyroid C-cell tumors in animal studies. It is not known whether these tumors occur in humans. Therefore, Zepbound should never be used in anyone with a personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC), or in patients with Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia syndrome type 2 (MEN 2). People who take Zepbound should be alert to any signs of thyroid cancer, such as a persistent hoarse voice, difficulty swallowing or breathing, or a lump in the neck.
The most common side effects of Zepbound include:
Nausea
Vomiting
Diarrhea or constipation
Stomach pain
Indigestion
Burping
Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD)
Fatigue
Injection site reactions (redness, itching, pain, or rash)
Hair loss
If you have symptoms of an allergic reaction, such as hives, difficulty breathing, or swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat, get emergency medical help right away. Other serious side effects may include kidney problems, gallbladder problems, inflammation of the pancreas, suicidal thoughts and behaviors, eye problems, and others. Consult your healthcare provider for more information about side effects.
Before taking Zepbound, tell your healthcare provider about all the medications you take, including prescription and OTC medicines, vitamins, and supplements. Some examples of drug interactions include:
Hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) when combined with insulin or certain diabetes medications like glimepiride, glyburide, or glipizide. A lower dose of insulin or diabetes medication may be required.
Zepbound may impact the absorption of oral medications, so your healthcare provider may advise you on the timing of your medications.
Drugs with a narrow therapeutic index (such as warfarin) will need to be closely monitored. A narrow therapeutic index means a small window exists between a drug being effective and causing toxicity.
Women who use oral birth control pills will need to switch to a non-oral form of birth control, or add a barrier method of birth control, such as condoms, for 4 weeks after starting Zepbound and for 4 weeks after each dose increase.
This is not a full list of drug interactions, and others may occur. Talk to your healthcare professional about drug interactions and how they may affect you.
You should not take Zepbound if you are allergic to tirzepatide, Mounjaro, or any ingredient in Zepbound. Also, you should not take Zepbound if you have a personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC), or if you have Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia syndrome type 2 (MEN 2).
Yes, Zepbound is FDA-approved for weight loss in people with obesity, or overweight with risk factors such as high blood pressure or Type 2 diabetes. In clinical studies, people who took Zepbound lost up to 25% of their body weight, or an average of 60 pounds, when Zepbound was combined with intensive diet and exercise changes. Individual results will vary.
People tend to lose more weight from the active ingredient in Zepbound, tirzepatide, than the active ingredient in Wegovy, semaglutide. However, each drug can lead to significant weight loss, especially when combined with lifestyle changes like diet and exercise. The best drug depends on individual factors—and insurance coverage may play a role as well. Ask your healthcare provider for medical advice on the best medication for you.
