Liraglutide is the active ingredient in Saxenda. It is part of a group of drugs called glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) agonists, and it works similarly to human GLP-1 that is naturally produced by the body. The GLP-1 hormone helps regulate food intake and appetite by decreasing hunger and increasing feelings of fullness.
Liraglutide is prescribed as Victoza for the treatment of Type 2 diabetes; however, in higher doses, it is used to manage weight loss in those who are obese. Saxenda may also be prescribed to people who are overweight with at least one weight-related medical problem, such as high blood pressure, diabetes, or high cholesterol.
Saxenda comes as an injection that is administered under the skin (subcutaneously). Saxenda is usually prescribed to be used once daily.
One pre-filled single-use Saxenda pen contains 3 mL of 6 mg/mL injectable solution. Your doctor may prescribe a daily dose of 0.6 mg, 1.2 mg, 1.8 mg, 2.4 mg, or 3 mg. The dosage of Saxenda is usually started as 0.6 mg once daily and gradually increased each week to a target dose of 3 mg once daily.
Your healthcare provider may calculate the best dosage for you based on factors like your body mass index (BMI), medical history, and a current list of medications you take (including over-the-counter drugs).
Saxenda is usually injected into the thigh, abdomen, or upper arm once daily without regard to the timing of meals. You can rotate between these injection sites to avoid skin irritation. If you have concerns about using Saxenda, review the medication guide for information. You can also consult with your healthcare provider on the proper way to administer the injection.
The most common side effects of Saxenda include:
Upset stomach
Abdominal pain
Constipation
Diarrhea
Low blood sugar (hypoglycemia)
Nausea
Vomiting
Headache
Dizziness
Fatigue
Changes in certain enzyme levels in the blood
Injection site reactions, such as redness, irritation, or swelling around the site of injection
The most serious side effects of Saxenda include:
Inflammation of the pancreas (pancreatitis)
Kidney problems
Gallbladder problems
Severe hypoglycemia
Increased heart rate
Depression or suicidal thoughts
Thyroid tumors
Serious allergic reactions
Tell your doctor if you have a personal or family history of thyroid cancer before using Saxenda. If you experience certain symptoms, such as hoarseness, trouble swallowing, swelling in your neck, and shortness of breath, tell your doctor immediately as these could be symptoms of thyroid cancer.
Talk to your doctor before taking Saxenda if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. Saxenda should not be used in women who are pregnant. It is unknown whether Saxenda passes into breast milk.
Seek medical advice on the appropriate use of Saxenda based on your overall health condition, medical history, and response to treatment.
Certain people are not good candidates for treatment with Saxenda. These include:
People with a personal or family history of thyroid cancer or multiple endocrine neoplasia syndrome type 2.
People with an allergy to any ingredients in Saxenda, including liraglutide
Women who are pregnant
Saxenda may cause adverse effects in people with these characteristics. Saxenda should only be taken if the benefits outweigh the risks of potential harm.
According to a study by the manufacturer, 85% of nearly 4,000 patients lost at least some weight while taking Saxenda over 56 weeks. Three out of five patients lost an average of 12 pounds, while one out of three patients lost an average of 23 pounds. Around 6% of patients lost an average of 47 pounds. For best results, Saxenda should be used with a low-calorie diet and regular physical activity.
How it works: Your body naturally produces glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1), which is a hormone that plays a role in controlling appetite. As a GLP-1 receptor agonist, Saxenda activates the GLP-1 receptor to promote the effects of GLP-1. In other words, Saxenda helps patients lose weight by mimicking GLP-1 and controlling appetite.
Wegovy (semaglutide) and Saxenda (liraglutide) are GLP-1 agonists that work in identical ways to control appetite. Both medications are FDA-approved for weight loss. However, Wegovy is typically injected once per week and Saxenda is usually injected once per day. Both drugs are effective and the amount of weight loss achieved with either drug can vary.
